Recap / What If Elektra Had Lived

Go To

Daredevil is paying his respects at Elektra's grave when the Watcher appears, and gives him some closure by telling him the story of what would have happened if Bullseye hadn't killed her.

In some universe that resembles, but is not, Earth 616, Bullseye was killed before he murdered Elektra. If she'd survived, she would have carried out a hit on Foggy Nelson... but found herself unable to go through with it. Kingpin, who'd ordered the assassination, would have put a price on her head, causing her to flee to Matt's house for some help. Matt does decide to help her, and the two flee New York, living happily together out of Kingpin's reach.

Back in the main universe, Daredevil is left alone, but at least with the comfort that he and Elektra could have worked out.

In the second story, What If… The Yellowjacket had Died?, Hank Pym meets his end when his wife Janet spends a few minutes longer thinking about their marriage, leaving her unable to warn him of the oncoming tank thrown his way. With her husband dead and any hope of resolving their troubled relationship gone, Janet starts to take a turn for the worse, dismissing the Avengers’ airing Hank’s dirty laundry as Malicious Slander and going out to beat up common crooks as “The Black Wasp”. All of this culminates in Janet refusing to warn Cap of imminent danger in a building fire, having a Heel Realisation upon seeing Captain America saved from death by Tigra , leading to her resignation from the Avengers.

What If... Elektra had Troped?

What If… Yellowjacket had Died? contains examples of:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Janet retires from superheroics and quits the Avengers, but is at peace with Hank’s death.
  • Bystander Syndrome: While the others are saving people from a building fire, Janet just stands there and plans to let Cap get crushed by a falling pile of rubble, in retaliation for Hank’s death.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Janet as the Black Wasp changes her colours to… erm, black.
  • Karma Houdini: Elfqueen takes advantage of the confusion of Yellowjacket’s demise to fly off into space.
  • Lonely Funeral: Janet is the only attendee at Hank’s funeral other than the clergyman.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Janet blames Cap for Hank’s death, since he yelled out to Elfqueen.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Averted. Jan assures Hank’s grave that she doesn’t bare any ill will for his final words to her being angry.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Unable to directly avenge Hank’s death, Janet takes it out on low level hoods.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: Janet’s rift with the others is formed when Captain America discusses all of Hank Pym’s less than pleasant aspects in an interview after his death.
