Tropes in this episode:

  • Awful Truth: Continuing from last episode, Van learns more details about Folken's survival and defection.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Dilandau is now full-on Ax-Crazy and hellbent on killing Van at any and all costs — and all because of the scar Van inflicted on Dilandau's 'beautiful face' last episode.
  • Foreshadowing: The Compact Disc Hitomi finds in the Palas bazaar, proving that she's not the first, most recent visitor to Gaea from the Mystic Moon.
  • Frame-Up: Folken is able to successfully pass off the destruction of Fanelia as retaliation for a 'surprise attack' on Zaibach.
  • Hope Spot: With their arrival in Palas, Allen intends to brief the King about Zaibach's attack on their outpost and Fanelia...only to realize Folken got there first and the King is friendly with Zaibach.
  • Loophole Abuse: Folken orders Dilandau to remain in the floating fortress while he conducts diplomatic business in Palas (and to prevent him from going after Van while Folken tries to recruit his brother). Dilandau gets around this direct order by targeting Van from the fortress' landing bay with a long-ranged attack (and without technically leaving their mobile base).
  • Madness Mantra: Dilandai's obsessive repetition of "[My cut] stings".
  • Mistaken for Servant: Due to Hitomi's Japanese High School uniform, Millerna accidentally mistakes her for a servant. This, combined with her obvious infatuation for Allen, gets the Princess on the wrong foot with Hitomi from jump.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: If there was any chance of Folken persuading Van to come over to Zaibach's side, it goes up in smoke after Dilandau goes Leeroy Jenkins.
  • Oh, Crap!: Allen when he realizes Folken beat them to Palas and has ingratiated himself with King Aston.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • King Aston is unwilling to plunge his entire nation into a war (let alone one with his ally) over a single incident at a distant outpost.
    • Dilandu's injury won't heal (and eventually scars) because he vainly and obsessively keeps poking and prodding the wound. It even gets lampshaded by one of his subordinates.
  • That Man Is Dead: Folken is adamant to Van that the Folken he knew a decade ago died with the dragon he fought.
  • Tranquil Fury: Folken ends up pissed at Dilandau after the latter's attempt to kill Van ruins his attempt to recruit his brother to Zaibach's cause.
