Recap / The Simpsons S 30 E 12 The Girl On The Bus

Go To

When Lisa spots a new best friend from the window of the bus, she gets a taste of what life could be like with a different, more cultured family, and proceeds to try and live a double life.

  • Ascended Meme: When Homer texts Lisa that he can't find his phone, Lisa replies back that he's using it. Homer replies with an animated gif of him retreating into the bushes, a popular meme from "Homer Loves Flanders".
  • Borrowed Catchphrase:
    • Lisa asks Ned to pretend to be her dad, which he has a little too much fun doing. (We later see that he's gotten the hang of actually saying "D'oh!")
Ned: God bless you, and as I like to say, a hearty woo-hoo!
Sam's dad: Well, God bless you, Mr. Simpson! (drives off)
Ned: I hate stupid Flanders! Annoyed grunt, annoyed grunt!
      Lisa: Thank you! (goes inside)
      Ned: Mmmm...deception.
    • When Marge catches Lisa sneaking out of the house.
      Marge: Hello, Lisa.
      Lisa: AHHH! SIDESHOW MOM!
    • Bart greets Disco Stu with "Disco Stu, always pitching woo."
  • Couch Gag: The couch gag features Thanos using Maggie's pacifier (which she gave him) as the final Infinity Stone. Both Homer and Marge are dusted away in addition to the two oldest kids, Lisa and Bart. After the carnage is complete, Maggie sits next to Thanos on the couch.
  • The Cameo: Thanos appears in this episode's couch gag, sitting on the family's couch as the Simpsons stand before him. Baby Maggie hands Thanos her pacifier, which he uses to complete his Infinity Gauntlet. Upon pointing the completed Gauntlet at the family both Homer and Marge, in addition to their two young children, Bart and Lisa, quickly disintegrate into dust. Maggie then joins Thanos on the couch.
  • Exact Words: Lisa derives her lies about the family from the truth, saying that Homer "works with his hands" (strangling Bart), describing Marge as a "chemist" due to her skill at combining laundry detergents, and calling Maggie a professor in the field of "non-linguistic communication."
    Lisa: Has a high chair.
  • Gainax Ending: Near the end of the episode, the dinner with the two families became awkward and Bart decides to break it by mentioning he renovated his room into a lounge, which was never even brought up throughout the entire episode. Then the episode ends with Bart's room becoming a night club that only allows invited people.
  • Genre Savvy: Lisa understands that any friendship she makes won't last and, on giving Sam a goodbye present when she's thought to be moving away, notes that she bought it almost immediately after meeting her.
  • Hand Wave: Sam's family visits the Simpsons' house for dinner, still believing the lies Lisa told them about her family. When Lisa fesses up, she asks Sam's dad why he wasn't bothered by the fact that Homer was obviously not the man (Ned Flanders) that she'd introduced to him as her father earlier. Sam's dad said he simply assumed that Lisa's father had gone bald and gained a lot of weight in a very short time. (Why they didn't question Maggie, supposedly a professor, being a baby, or the presence of Bart after Lisa told them Maggie was her only sibling, is anyone's guess.)
  • Reading the Stage Directions Out Loud: While imitating Homer, Ned actually says "Annoyed grunt" instead of "D'oh!"
  • Unscrewed Salt Shaker: Bart pulls this prank on Homer during dinner. Homer doesn't want to give Bart the satisfaction, and tries to finish his meal with all the salt included.
  • Where the Hell Is Springfield?: The Wright Brothers once flew over Springfield's state on their trip from Ohio to Kentucky. Which, if you look at a map, doesn't help.
