Recap / The Proud Family S 2 E 17 The Camp The Counselor The Mole And The Rock

Go To

Penny, Dijonay, Zoey, and LaCienega volunteer to be junior counselors at Camp Avalon for the weekend. Oscar, fearing that Penny might fall in love with a boy over there, tasks Peabo (who now has a crush on Zoey) with spying on her while at camp. On their way there, Penny develops a crush on the Reverend's son and senior counselor, Tory. At Camp Avalon, the gang goes on different activities while Penny fantasizes about being romantically involved with Tory, to comedically disastrous results. They soon discover Kissing Rock; according to legend, if a person is denied a kiss while standing under the rock, the rock will fall. Later that night, Tory reveals to Penny that he may have a crush on someone with an age difference, which she assumes that he's referring to her. At the dorms, One of Dijonay's sisters, Paprika, gives Penny a note from Tory, telling her to meet him at Kissing Rock. Peabo, spying on Penny and having his heart broken by Zoey not thinking highly of him, relays the information to Oscar, who races all the way to Camp Avalon. When Penny arrives at Kissing Rock, Tory becomes confused by her presence, and realizes that Paprika gave the letter to the wrong girl. It was meant for a senior counselor named Jenny, and that the age difference that Tory mentioned earlier referred to how Jenny was older than him by two years. After an awkward moment, Tory promises Penny not to tell anyone about what happened and returns to camp, while Penny stays behind and starts crying. Oscar, who traveled all the way to Kissing Rock (thanks to Dijonay ratting Penny out) and nearly got mauled by a coyote on the way, discovers a broken-hearted Penny who tells him what had happened. Oscar decides to cheer her up by telling her that he's relieved that nothing had happened, that he distrusts the boys she dates because he didn't raise them, and that he trusts Penny because he and Trudy raised her right. He also doesn't want Penny to kiss a boy until she's older because he believes that it could lead to trouble. Feeling better, Penny decides to return to camp while Oscar stays behind, scoffing at the legend of Kissing Rock. That is, until said rock falls on him. The next day, Oscar, fully trusting of Penny, decides to drive back home, only to quickly take her with him when he sees her talking to another boy.

Tropes

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Penny, who normally never cares for Oscar's jabs at Suga Mama, laughs at his suggestion that her waiting until she's Suga Mama's age is too old before deciding to let her kiss when she's 100.
  • Bolt of Divine Retribution: When Oscar refuses to pay money he owes to his church, he is struck by lightning and then tells Trudy to write a check.
  • Broken Pedestal: Peabo's rather broken-hearted when he overhears that Zoey doesn't exactly think highly of him. The same also applies to Penny when she finds out that the past few days with Tory meant nothing to him and her.
  • Exact Words: Tory tells Penny that he's interested in a girl at camp with an age difference. Naturally, she assumes it's her, at age 13, because of her growing crush on him, the note she received by accident didn't help since she and Jenny have names that rhyme. Tory clarifies he meant he had feelings for Jenny, since he's 16 and she's 18.
  • Freudian Excuse: Oscar explains why doesn’t trust boys: because he didn’t raise them.
  • Her Boyfriend's Jacket: After Tory puts a jacket on her, Penny thinks this is a sign that he returns her feelings and wears it for almost every scene after it. It turns out he assumed it was her own jacket, with the actual owner approaching her at the end.
  • Idiot Ball: Dijonay splashes water on Penny even after her marshmallow fire was put out.
  • Imagine Spot: All over the place with them in the montage with Penny and Tory doing activities together, which she briefly imagines more romantically.
  • Irony: Oscar spent the better part of the week fretting that Penny was getting up to all sorts of things young teenage girls shouldn't. By the time he arrives, he's rather bemused to learn that nothing happened to Penny, as the boy she was crushing on didn't requite her feelings.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After scoffing at the legend of Kissing Rock, the rock falls on Oscar.
  • Nice Guy: Tory, who is mindful of Penny’s safety, but is romantically involved with Jenny.
  • Parents as People: Oscar admits that he trusts Penny because he and Trudy raised her, but he doesn't trust any boy she likes because he didn't raise them.
  • Pet the Dog: LaCienega really does try to cover for Penny when Oscar demands to know where she is. She doesn’t even ask Penny for any favors for it.
