Recap / The New Adventures of Invader Zim, S1E9 "Dib the Dreamwalker"

Go To

Dib begins experimenting with a spell drive which lets him enter other people's dreams.

  • Astral Projection: How the Dream Walker spell works.
  • Continuity Nod: Dib notes that the powerpoint count on his spell drives is low, while Viera looks embarrassed. Clearly, the count is low from her use of spells against Gaz in the previous chapter, which neither girl has mentioned to anyone.
  • Dream Episode: The whole point of this chapter is Dib exploring the other characters' dreams.
  • Dream Walker: As noted in the title, Dib spends the chapter doing this. Deconstructed quite a bit, as the moral implications of entering other people's subconsciousness are discussed.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Norlock directly references this trope when he displays his disgust at the thought of entering people's dreams.
  • Hypocrite: Viera gives Dib a speech about responsible use of magic, one chapter after using it to pull a Humiliation Conga on Gaz. Word of God comments on this, and offers a partial justification by stating that she's young, so it's to be expected.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Dib mentions a dream he had where Zim conquered the city with organic pants. This references both the cancelled episode "When Pants Ruled", and Issue 8 of the comic series, which adapted it.
    • Zim's dream has him dressed like Emperor Zim, his Bad Future self from Issue 12.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Norlock being able to see astral projections.
  • Noodle Incident: According to Viera, when they were eight, Steve strapped himself to a rocket for some reason.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The gag that Gaz's nightmare is a cheerfully happy dream is based on a similar one from an episode of The Life and Times of Juniper Lee.
    • Viera's dream is heavily based on the Adam West Batman show.
    • GIR's dream includes the "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" meme, as well as a cameo by several electric sheep.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Dib ends up being given the riot act by Norlock, of all people, for his continued use of the immoral Dream Walker spell.
