Recap / The Haunting Hour S 1 E 12

Go To

  • Adults Are Useless: Subverted; Chris's father keeps trying to talk to Chris, making it seem like he's unaware of Chris's concerns that the clowns are evil. However, Chris's father was trying to explain that Chris was coming of age and turning into a clown.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Chris's mother loves planting mom smooches on him. He gets this vibe from his father when he thinks he's trying to talk to him about puberty.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear if the clown at Chris's seventh birthday part was a member of the clown species or an ordinary person in makeup.
  • Clown Species: Clowns are apparently a branch of humans who take a clownish appearance when they hit puberty, and they mask and blend in among regular humans.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Chris's parents are revealed to be members of the clown species this way, with the human faces we've seen them with throughout the episode being masks they wear to blend in to society.
  • The Ending Changes Everything: The reveal that Chris is actually a clown makes his father's attempts to talk him different than just discussing puberty. Also, the clowns that were stalking Chris and saying they were "here for him" was acutally genuine since they were welcoming another member of their community.
  • Exact Words: Chris's father explains that his son is going to be going through some changes. He wasn't talking about puberty, but rather a change into a clown.
  • Girl Next Door: Danica, Chris's neighbor who he has a crush on. It's clear she feels the same way.
  • Latex Perfection: Worn by Chris' parents to blend in among humans.
  • Monster Clown: Downplayed. While the clowns are quite creepy and deranged with their Dissonant Serenity towards Chris' distress about becoming what he fears, they don't actually do anything evil or harmful to innocent people.
  • Poor Communication Kills: If Chris just let his father fully explain what is coming, it might've softened the blow of the reveal.
  • Real After All: Before the clown show, you could make the case that the clowns Chris encountered on his bike were figments of his imagination brought on by his phobia. The reveal at the end, coupled with some of those same exact clowns being present at Kaptain Krazee's show show the encounter was real.
  • The Reveal: The clowns in Kaptain Krazee's show aren't ordinary people in makeup, but a race of humanoid creatures who look human until their thirteenth birthdays. Chris and his parents turn out to be part of this species.
  • Rewatch Bonus: The actions of Chris's father and those weird clowns being "supportive" of Chris is revealed to be due to Chris about to become a clown just like them.
  • The Talk: Chris's father tries to have a conversation with his son about how, on his thirteenth birthday, his body might start going through some changes. It's eventually revealed that he didn't mean human puberty—-he meant that Chris would be turning into a clown on that day.
  • 13th Birthday Milestone: Members of the clown species look human until their thirteenth birthdays, upon which they gain their clown appearances.
  • Wham Line: "The makeup, it won't come off."
  • Wham Shot: When Chris tries to remove the makeup, to his surprise it won't come off. Then, he finds his parents removing wigs and masks to reveal that they're clowns as well.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: What happens to Chris's friends? Will Chris be allowed by the clowns to "blend into society" like his parents by wearing a mask resembling his original appearance?
  • Xtremely Kool Letterz: Kaptain Krazee's name is spelled this way.
