Recap / The Goldbergs S 9 E 12 The Kissing Bandits

Go To

A Plot: Adam lets himself be filmed at a party, and is aghast to see he kissed someone other than his girlfriend while drunk on jello shots (assuming it was just plain jello). Geoff advises him to confess immediately, while Erica suggests he keep it a secret; Adam follows the latter's advice, to disastrous consequences.

B Plot: Joanne finds out that Barry's fascinated by ice-dancing, and encourages him to embrace it...to Beverly's dismay, as she had enjoyed Barry secretly watching tapes of it with just her.

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Adam, aside from performing some corny impressions, ends up kissing another girl while drunk on jello shots.
  • Big Sister Instinct: After Brea breaks up with Adam, Geoff asks if Erica really thought keeping secrets was a good idea; she didn't, but she had expected complete honestly to go even worse, and was only trying to look out for her little brother.
  • Blatant Lies: In the opening, Barry sneaks off to watch live Winter Olympic ice-dancing with Beverly by saying they're about to head in totally separate directions and nobody should question it.
  • Book Ends: The Tag is identical to the B-Plot's opening, in that Erica finds tapes involving something Geoff secretly loves, but then switches to mirroring the A-Plot's start when she makes him hammer a tape into pieces.
  • Contrived Coincidence: The day after Adam decides to keep his kissing another girl a secret, his English class is going over The Tell-Tale Heart and his father is watching Columbo.
  • Destroy the Evidence: After Erica convinces Adam to keep his unfaithfulness a secret from Brea, she gives him a hammer and has him destroy the tape that recorded it. And then in The Tag, Erica finds out that Geoff is a huge fan of The Kissing Bandit and forces him to prove his faithfulness by destroying his own tape of Morganna.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: In order to prove to Brea how sorry he is when she learns he kissed another girl and didn't tell her for a whole week, he invites the other girl to her house to help him apologize...and it turns out the other girl immediately called her boyfriend and confessed after the kiss.
  • Dressed in Layers: When Beverly decides to join Barry's ice-dancing, it turns out she's been wearing a sequined blue dress underneath her regular outfit since the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, two weeks ago.
  • Heartfelt Apology: To apologize to Beverly after realizing he genuinely enjoyed watching ice-dancing with her, Barry learns how to ice-dance from Murray's coworker Vic to give her a private performance...and when he falls flat on his ass because he's only had a day of practice, Beverly decides to join him, and they end up dancing perfectly in sync.
  • Hidden Depths: After Barry initially confesses his love of ice dancing, Vic reveals he used to be a professional at it, only quitting because his dancing partner passed away...a fact he's already mentioned numerous times to Bill in the past, who ignored it because he only really knew Vic through Murray.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Immediately after Adam sees himself drunkenly kissing another girl and asks if maybe it was just for a scene, filmed-Adam states "That just happened, and it wasn't just for a scene!"
  • It's Not You, It's Me: At the end of the episode, Adam tries one last plea to get Brea to forgive him...but Brea realizes that, if their relationship was in this much danger after a mere two weeks apart, the years spent in different colleges trying to manage a long-distance relationship will be even more stressful. So, despite Adam begging her not to say it, she breaks up with him.
  • No True Scotsman: When Barry tries watching ice-dancing with both Beverly and Joanne, Beverly's unwillingness to share the private time has her repeatedly mock Joanne for not immediately understanding something she's just been introduced to.
  • Title Drop: Geoff brings up Morganna Roberts, The Kissing Bandit, when trying to help Adam deal with the fallout of having lied to Brea. Becomes a Chekhov's Gag in The Tag, when Erica finds Geoff's secret videotapes of her and makes him choose between Morganna or herself.
  • Unmanly Secret: Barry's love of ice-dancing, which Joanne encourages him isn't embarrassing and should be embraced. Later, when Beverly gets too clingy and Barry wants to only watch the event with Joanne, it turns out the really unmanly part is that he enjoyed spending time with his mom.
  • Unsuspectingly Soused: Adam gets drunk on jello shots, mistaking them for regular Jell-O cups.
  • What Did I Do Last Night?: Adam has absolutely no recollection of kissing another girl while drunk on jello shots until he sees himself on tape.
