Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 5 Uncle Ing

Go To

A Plot: Erica, tired from the stresses of being pregnant, demands a break. However, the moment Geoff's taken her away from her overbearing relatives and her break begins, it's time for her to have her baby.

B Plot: Adam and Barry ask for advice as they prepare to become uncles.

  • Anti-Advice: Adam and Barry get advice from their uncle Marvin, but compile it as a list of how not to be good uncles. Marvin finds out and is disappointed.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Bev, Adam and Barry get the car stuck in the mud, Marvin arrives to save them and take them to the hospital where Erica is giving birth.
  • The Bus Came Back: Marvin reappears for the first time since "Angst-Giving", three seasons ago.
  • Creepy Stalker Van: One of Barry's plans for how to become good uncles is to use one to lure kids they can practice on. Adam immediately shoots the idea down.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Erica names her daughter Muriel Allison, as a way of honoring Murray and Pops (Albert).
  • Giant Food: Inspired by the giant pancake in Uncle Buck, Erica asks Bev to make her one, and she instantly complies. In The Tag, Marvin attempts to make other types of giant food.
  • Heel Realization: Marvin's Big Damn Heroes moment was motivated by him "trying to be a better uncle", having realized from Adam and Barry getting Anti-Advice from him that he's been too unreliable in the past.
  • Lethal Chef: In The Tag, Marvin's attempt to make a giant meatball fails because, while the outside looks fine, the inner meat is still raw, causing both Barry and Marvin to regret biting into it.
  • Maternity Crisis: Erica's water breaks right at the start of her "baby-moon", far away from Beverly and the hospital with the people they knew and could rely on.
  • Shout-Out: The episode starts with Adam and Barry watching Uncle Buck in order to learn how to be interesting uncles for Erica's baby.
  • Tempting Fate: On their way to the hospital in the town where Erica's giving birth, Adam states "Nothing can stop us" right before the car gets stuck in mud, and then acknowledges that this trope occurred.
  • Two-Person Pool Party: Since Erica wants to take her break somewhere with water, Geoff surprises Erica by taking her to a skeevy business that specializes in hot tub intimacy (and gets Beverly off of their trail by telling her they're instead going to the beach house), not realizing that pregnant women and hot tubs don't mix until they reach their destination and Erica tells him.
