Recap / The Cleveland Show S 2 E 8 Murray Christmas

Go To

In the second Christmas episode (and first Hanukkah episode) of The Cleveland Show, Rallo is forced to volunteer at The Stoolbend Retirement Home, where he becomes frenemies with an old Jewish man named Murray.

Tropes:

  • Bleak Abyss Retirement Home: Murray wanted to escape The Stoolbend Rest Home because it was so oppressive and unfun, but it's later learned that the workers at the home are the only ones keeping him alive.
  • Christmas Episode: The second one of the series.
  • Everyone Is Christian at Christmas: Murray takes part in Christmas festivities, despite being Jewish.
  • Greedy Jew: Murray cons Rallo out of a bunch of money.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: On every Christmas of Cleveland's childhood, he got brutally assaulted by his father. LeVar played a little game with him, where every "boxing day", he'd get into a boxing match with his son. For every match Cleveland won, he'd win one present. Unsurprisingly, Cleveland never won, and therefore, never got a single Christmas present in his childhood.
Donna: Cleveland, your father beat you every Christmas? That's awful! [to Evelyn] How could you be okay with this!?
Evelyn: This is the first I'm hearing of it.
  • Holiday Episode: Not only is this the show's second Christmas special, but it's also the first Hanukkah special.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Murray, an old man from the Greatest Generation, and Rallo, a member of Generation Z, living together in perfect harmony.
  • Jewish Complaining: Murray has some rather justified qualms with the overrepresentation of Christmas every year.
  • Retired Badass: LeVar used to be a kickass, child abusing, boxing champ, back in the day, but now that he's 62 years old, he is no longer a match to his full-grown son.
  • Odd Friendship: Rallo and Murray's friendship begins here.
