Anslo Garrick (No. 16) provides examples of:

  • Batman Gambit: Anslo Garrick leaks intel that someone wants Reddington, forcing the FBI to bring him back to the base and put it in lockdown, which makes it easy for Garrick and his men to storm in and capture Red.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The elaborate Glassy Prison from the first episode reappears as a very secure safe room.
  • Content Warning: The episode aired with a warning about the violent content.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Anslo Garrick’s mercenaries curbstomp the FBI SWAT Team guarding the Post Office blacksite and the FBI agents inside.
  • "Die Hard" on an X: Anslo Garrick’s invasion of the FBI's black ops compound. As an extra Shout-Out, Liz loses her shoes early on and runs around barefoot for about half the episode, just like John McClane.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Reddington refuses to open the box and allow Garrick to capture him, but immediately changes his tune when Garrick threatens Luli and Dembe, begging Cooper to open it. He's visibly distraught when Luli is executed.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When it looks like Anslo Garrick is about to kill him, Dembe merely tells Reddington that It Has Been an Honor, calls him "brother", promises to see him again in the next life, and then they pray together. He doesn't die, but it still counts.
  • Glassy Prison: Reddington ends up using it as a refuge.
  • Hired Guns: Anslo Garrick's crack team of mercenaries called “The Wild Bunch”.
  • Hollywood Tactics: The supposedly experienced men guarding the facility do not react at all the way such men would in real life. Any deviation from the norm (such as a truck suddenly backing up to a loading dock without stopping for the driver to be identified) is treated as something where you just yell at the driver to stop, whereas in reality the guards would have known to immediately regard it as an attack and responded accordingly. After it's clear they are under attack, you see the guards walking around alone, not providing each other with covering fire, walking blindly into a room or around corners without clearing the area first, each of them has communications gear but none of them are ever seen using it to coordinate their moves, etc. Cringeworthy among audience members who have military or law enforcement experience.
  • It Has Been an Honor: Dembe says something akin to this to Reddington when it looks like Anslo Garrick is about to kill him.
  • MacGyvering:
    • Liz uses a water bottle as a silencer.
    • Reddington does a fair bit of improvised medical treatment to Ressler, improvising a tourniquet with an emptied pistol magazine and necktie, live blood transfusion, and cauterising a wound by pouring in gunpowder and lighting it with a match.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She notably takes several levels in this episode. She takes out multiple members of Anslo’s crew, and helps Aram re-establish communication with the outside world.
  • Wham Episode: The Post Office is invaded, and members of the task force are killed or captured. The episode ends with Liz being confronted by one of Anslo’s men, Luli dead, and a gunshot going off as Anslo points a gun to Dembe’s head.
