Recap / The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes! S2 E15 "Powerless"

Go To

Amora, with her new powers, uses Loki, still trapped in that tree with the serpent, and sends him on a mission using a new toy at her disposal — the Destroyer, a mobile weapon of Dwarven build. Just to make things worse, Amora gains a new spell that somehow reverts Captain America and Iron Man to the scrawny old Steve Rogers and the Mk I suit, with the bonus of messing with Tony's intelligence, while Thor is rendered completely powerless. As if having the Wrecking Crew to deal with wasn't enough...

Tropes:

  • Aesop Amnesia: Part of the reason the episode was poorly received was that the story hinged on Thor learning a lesson in and demonstrating humility, as if he hadn't already gone through that in the first season. Then again, he never been a mortal himself before this episode.
  • Anything but That!; Thor stares in horror on the sight of the Destroyer, an old weapon Odin commissioned the Dwarves to build.
  • Badass Normal: Hawkeye demonstrates this the most when his allies are changed. Steve is not too far behind despite being his pre-Super Serum self, as his determination alone was the reason he was chosen to be Captain America.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Averted. Hawkeye runs out of arrows during the chase.
  • Brought Down to Normal: The reverted Avengers. Thanks to Amora, Thor loses his godly powers, Cap is back to as he was before the Super Soldier formula and, while Iron Man has his old armor, he loses much of his intelligence and thus the knowledge to properly work it. Amora warns Loki that if Thor learned humility while he is in his mortal form before he kills him, her spell will be broken and the heroes' powers will be restored.
  • The Bus Came Back: Subverted. It's the first time we even see Loki after "A Day Unlike Any Other", but for security reasons he can't be moved from that tree with the serpent.
  • Deal with the Devil: The Surtur-powered Enchantress offers Loki a Destroyer armor and a chance to face Thor again. She sweetens the deal be promising him freedom from his prison if he successfully kills Thor.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: With his intelligence affected, Iron Man struggles to work his old armor.
  • Mythology Gag: Thor conveniently breaking a leg and gaining a cane to use references Donald Blake, who had to act as avatar for Thor before being Ret-Gone.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Loki getting rid of the Wrecking Crew instead of working with them helps the heroes quite a bit.
  • Tempting Fate: Loki believes Thor will never learn of humility as long as he is reduced to a mortal. Eventually, Thor learns it from his friends being Defiant to the End.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: The Wrecking Crew exit the story, courtesy of the Destroyer. Only Loki gets to kill his brother.
  • Took a Level in Dumbass: Tony doesn't become dumb, per se, but it's enough to prevent him from properly interacting with his old armor.
  • Recycled Premise: "Along Came a Spider..." also had our heroes stuck underground.
  • The End... Or Is It?: After Loki's defeat, Amora leaves him back to the snake. Despite his failure, Surtur is unfazed and says that Ragnarok is approaching.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: To the Thor movie of all things, from the Destroyer's involvement to having Thor specifically learn a lesson in humility for a plot device.
