Recap / The Americans S 6 E 3 Urban Transport Planning

Go To

Elizabeth is still angry at Paige for running from her post after Elizabeth killed General Rennhull. Philip gets her to calm down, and Elizabeth does let slip some, though not all, of the details of her mission. She also follows Glenn Haskard to a lunch meeting he has with some of other members of the Summit meeting, including Fyodor Nesterenko (Alex Feldman), one of the Soviet negotiators, and gets the idea to bug Glenn's jacket. Elizabeth also makes another attempt to get the lithium sensor by meeting with the man in charge of quality control at the plant where they're made. She pretends to be someone checking security measures at the plant, but when the supervisor reveals his girlfriend works in that department, Elizabeth ends up killing him.

Stan finally meets up with Oleg, and while he apologizes for the CIA's attempts to blackmail Oleg, Stan warns him not to get involved in anything spy-related (though Oleg meets again with Philip at the end). Stan and Aderholt also become worried about Gennadi and Sofia, especially when she reveals she's involved with one of her co-workers at TASS, and has told him about what she's up to. Deciding to be on the safe side, Aderholt has the FBI offer Gennadi and Sofia asylum (along with their son), which they reluctantly accept (in Gennadi's case, as long as Stan helps him and Sofia get back together again).

Elsewhere, Philip struggles to try and pay for Henry's tuition, he and Elizabeth argue about the Soviet Union, and Renee asks Stan about applying for a job at the FBI.

This episode contains examples of:

  • #1 Dime: When Glenn is at lunch with the other members of the summit meeting, he admits he wears a jacket made in Japan to every baseball game he goes to because his wife bought it for him when they were stationed in Japan.
  • Call-Back: Oleg and Stan talk about Nina's death.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: A variation - Stan tells Oleg not to do anything spy-related and force Stan to arrest him.
  • Dramatic Irony: When Philip, who doesn't agree with Elizabeth's idealization of the Soviet Union, tells her she hasn't met with anyone from the country in 20 years, Elizabeth counters Philip hasn't either, unaware Philip has met someone who was living in the Soviet Union recently - Oleg.
  • Hollywood Cuisine: Claudia cooks zharkoye, a Russian stew, with Elizabeth and Paige, and Elizabeth brings some home to Philip later.
  • Rousing Speech: Philip again tries one of these to inspire the staff at the travel agency to do better at their jobs.
  • Shout-Out: Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love" plays at the end when Elizabeth kills the supervisor at the end.
  • Title Drop: Oleg's cover is he's taking courses in Urban Transport Planning at GWU, and he insists to Stan that's the only reason he's in D.C., which Stan doesn't buy.
