Recap / The Americans S 4 E 4 Chloramphenicol

Go To

After Gabriel gets infected with the glanders bacteria, Elizabeth, Philip, and William all quarantine with Gabriel (though William does so under protest). Elizabeth has a reaction to the antibiotic William injects her with, but in the end, all four of them manage to pull through. Elizabeth and Philip cancel the EPCOT trip (though they do go out bowling with Paige - who ends up lying to both Henry and Stan by claiming the two of them had to go to New York City for business - and Henry), and Elizabeth cancels the planned hit on Pastor Tim and his wife.

Aderholt asks Martha out for dinner, and while she tells him she's seeing a married man, Stan goes looking through her apartment, but doesn't find anything incriminating.

Oleg comes back to the Soviet Union for his brother's funeral. Igor asks him to stay for his mother's sake, but Oleg will only agree to do so if his father works to get Nina released. Unfortunately, Nina's death sentence is carried out and she gets executed.

The episode contains examples of:

  • Boom, Headshot!: How Nina is executed (through the back).
  • Call-Back: When Stan searches Martha's apartment, he finds her copy of Kama Sutra. He doesn't find the photo of her wedding with "Clark", however.
  • Flashback: During her reaction to the antibiotic, Elizabeth remembers having to care for her mother when she had diptheria.
  • Hope Spot: At the episode's end, it looks as if Nina has been released from prison and has secured passage to the United States with Anton. However, as one might have been able to guess, this turns out to be All Just a Dream.
  • Killed Off for Real: Nina, whose death sentence is immediately followed through on once its revealed that her appeal has been denied.
  • Pet the Dog: After her fever breaks, Elizabeth admits to Philip they can't kill Pastor Tim and his wife, and they need to find another way to deal with them.
  • Shout-Out: When Elizabeth and Philip take Paige and Henry out for bowling, Elizabeth bowls several strikes in a row. When Paige asks if the Soviets taught her to bowl, Elizabeth, in a Natasha Fatale accent, replies, "Vital part of training."
  • Skewed Priorities: William thinks Elizabeth is doing this when, while she's feverish, she asks Philip if he helped Henry study for his biology exam.
  • Spy Speak: Philip calls Joan and, in a coded message, tells her to cancel the planned hit on Pastor Tim and Alice.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Elizabeth throws up in a toilet because of her reaction to the antibiotic she's been given.
  • Wham Episode: Nina had been a major character since the second episode of the show, and her death serves as a bit of a reminder for just how severe the consequences of one's actions in the show can be.
