Are you scared girl?
With both Weapon Meister teams having failed to maintain proper soul collecting ability, Death comes up with a remedial lesson in which Maka, Soul, Black☆Star, and Tsubaki must investigate the mysterious resurrection of former teacher Sid Barrett as a Zombie and who is behind it. In the aftermath of the lesson, Kid and the Thompson Sisters join Death Weapon Meister Academy and have their first day.

"Remedial Lessons Arc" contains examples of:

  • The Ace: Stein is regarded by Lord Death as undoubtly the greatest meister to ever graduate from the DWMA.
  • Arm Cannon: Death the Kid's soul resonance attack, Death Cannon.
  • Artificial Zombie: Sid becomes one thanks to Stein
  • Bare-Handed Blade Block: Stein does this to Maka, while she's using Witch Hunter by the way.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: When Soul says they might get Spirit as their substitute teacher again if they hanven't found a permanent replacement for Sid yet, Maka says "No, anyone but him". Cue Dr. Stein.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Stein wipes the floor with Black Star and Maka at the same time.
  • Go Through Me: Soul shields Maka from Stein at the end of their fight.
  • Killed Offscreen: Sid's death prior to becoming a zombie was never shown, only told by Soul Eater as a school rumor. Further details of his death are explored in the prequel series Soul Eater Not!.
  • Mad Scientist: Professor Franken Stein of Soul Eater, whose love of dissection is played for laughs early on. The "mad" aspect becomes important later on, as madness is somewhat more concrete in this world.
    • Stein's likening for cutting people up is played for laughs, but it's also what he seriously would have done to Medusa given the chance (and Spirit, and Maka, and Kid, and anyone he saw as interesting).
  • Master of All: Stein has an incredibly flexible soul , allowing him to understand and master any weapon type he comes across. This is one of the reasons he is so difficult to defeat in a fight.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: Sid Becomes a Revenant Zombie after being killed, thanks to Dr. Franken Stein.
  • Secret Test of Character: Of a sort. More like a "Secret Test of Skill" to make them better and stronger than before. The whole fight with Sid and DR. Franken Stein was all set up by Lord Death. None of them are amused by this revelation.
  • Standard Female Grab Area: Sort of played straight during the introduction of and subsequent first fight with Stein. Stein grabs Maka by one of her ponytails at one point, almost completely immobilizing her. While this is certainly more effective (and more painful) than the arm, one would usually expect that a strong Action Girl like Maka would be perfectly capable of throwing a few elbows into Stein's stomach or something. Had the size of Stein's soul not made her sink to her knees in fear and had she not exhausted her strength in using (what was at the time) a technique that was her most powerful and which she was still inexperienced in, then Maka might have attempted an escape.
  • Stealth Mentor: Stein and Sid are both introduced as enemies.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Lampshaded by Soul during the fight with Stein:
Soul: He's been waiting patiently for you to finish this temper tantrum. Isn't that so polite of the good Dr. Stein?
  • True Sight: Stein and Maka can both see the souls of people who are still alive, although Stein is more skilled at reading the characters of the soul and thus is able to adjust his wavelength to any of thier attacks.
  • Unwinnable Training Simulation: Maka, Soul, Black☆Star, and Tsubaki, once they have apprehended Sid, are sent to kill the person who made him a zombie in the first place. That would be Stein, who is one of the most powerful Meisters in the world. They aren't told this is a test ahead of time.
