With Henry's help, Ichabod and Abbie enter Purgatory to rescue Katrina, and they must face the otherworldly realm's many dangers, including Moloch himself.

Tropes present in the episode:

  • Batman Gambit: Everything Henry did was a ploy to gain the heroes' trust so he could betray them at just the right moment.
  • Buried Alive: Henry subjects Ichabod to this fate in the final act.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Henry, revealed to be Jeremy Crane, magically binds his parents and delivers an angry speech about how their actions led to him being buried underground in a state of living death for hundreds of years.
Ichabod: Jeremy, listen to me, I beg you. We are all children in the absence of our parents. Believe me, I know this to be true.
    Henry: You know nothing!
Katrina: Every choice that I made, I made it to protect you.
Henry: I spent two centuries under the earth for your choices!
Ichabod: And she spent two centuries in Purgatory suffering the consequences!
Henry: (chuckles) Oh, look. This is our first family spat.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode, and thus Season One, ends with Ichabod being buried alive by Henry.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The hand that Abbie and Jenny saw coming out of the ground when they saw Moloch many years ago? It belonged to Jeremy Crane, revealed in this episode to be Henry Parrish.
  • Downer Ending: Abbie is trapped in Purgatory, Jenny is injured and unconscious, Katrina is in the clutches of Death just moments after getting out of Purgatory, Henry is revealed to be both Jeremy Crane AND the Horseman of War, the second seal of the Apocalypse is broken, and Ichabod is buried alive by his own son.
  • Evil All Along: Right from the beginning, Henry Parrish was really Jeremy Crane and working for Moloch.
  • Hidden Villain: Henry's speech to Ichabod in the final scene contains this trope.
Henry: (to Ichabod) War isn't coming to Sleepy Hollow. It's been waiting all along. And now, it begins.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: Both Ichabod and Abbie experience their ideal dream worlds after they arrive in Purgatory.
  • Luke, You Are My Father: Henry reveals he is Jeremy Crane, the son of Ichabod and Katrina who was believed to be dead.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: After everything that happens in the final fifteen minutes of the episode, the episode closes with "Sympathy for the Devil" playing over the title.
  • Wham Episode: Oh, yes. The last fifteen minutes change everything we thought we knew about Henry Parrish and end on a major cliffhanger with all of our heroes in dire straits.
  • You're Not My Father: Henry/Jeremy makes it abundantly clear that he considers Moloch his real father.
