After arriving in Cloudsdale City, the group watches Rainbow Dash face Spitfire in a Gym Battle.

  • Bittersweet Ending: Rainbow loses to Spitfire, but gains her respect and is encouraged to collect the rest of her badges before facing her in a rematch again. Also, though Spitfire needs to leave for a few days, that now gives Flash time to train for his battle against her when she returns.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Spitfire's Wondor, her ace Pokémon, easily defeat's Rainbow's first two Pokémon before finally going down against Tank, only for her Tornavian to beat Tank.
  • Good Parents: Rainbow's parents, Bow Hothoof and Windy Whistles, come to watch Rainbow's Gym Battle with Spitfire and cheer her on.
  • Mirror Match: Rainbow uses her own Wondor against Spitfire's, but Spitfire's more experienced Wondor wins.
  • Rock–Paper–Scissors: When Spitfire says she only has time to battle one of them before leaving for a few days, Flash and Rainbow play rock–paper–scissors to decide who battles her, with Rainbow winning.
  • Status Buff: Tornavian's signature move, Tornado Burst, increases the user's speed before the attack lands. Because its power is also equal to its user's speed that essentially means it gets stronger each time it is used.
  • The Worf Effect: Spitfire defeats Rainbow Dash, one of Flash's toughest rivals, 3-1 in a Gym Battle.
  • Worthy Opponent: Spitfire sees Rainbow as one. She is so impressed by her that she wants for Rainbow to collect seven Gym Badges before challenging her to a rematch, wanting to be Rainbow's final challenge before the Equestria League instead of just her sixth badge. Her dialogue with Cloud also implies she thinks Rainbow could be a future apprentice for hers, if not the future champion.
