Recap / My Little Pony: Make Your Mark: S5 E4 "Father of the Bridlewood"

Go To

Misty and Alphabittle catch up on lost time, while Sunny and Zipp consult Bridlewood's best storyteller in the hope of learning more about the history of Equestria.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Elder Flower calls Izzy "Dizzy" when she first sees her.
  • Anti-Smother Love Talk: Alphabittle goes all out trying to remind Misty of the things she enjoyed as a child, but having grown up and remembering virtually nothing of that time, Misty is a different person now and her interests have changed. Misty tries to bear with it for a while, but eventually admits the truth, convincing Alphabittle to start fresh.
  • The Cameo: The soup pony from "A Little Horse" is briefly seen as Elder Flower explores Zephyr Heights.
  • Comically Missing the Point: While Zipp focuses on Misty's mention of Opaline's "evil plotting game", Sunny is more focused on Misty accidentally calling Alphabittle "Dad-a-bittle".
  • Continuity Nod:
    • A four-way combo connected to Generation 4 while Sunny and Zipp are escorting Elderflower around Zephyr Heights.
      • First, she remarks that a pony is wearing a vintage hat from the Carousel Boutique (Rarity's clothing shop in Ponyville).
      • Later, she puts on a new pair of glasses that are shaped and tinted to match the shades worn by Vinyl Scratch (unicorn DJ living in Ponyville).
      • Right after that, she says that she once attended a wedding where "all the ponies kept changing shapes" — referring to the wedding of Shining Armor and Princess Cadance and the changeling invasion of Canterlot.
      • Finally, she says that Moondancer (a unicorn featured in a Season 5 episode of Friendship Is Magic) was her great-great-great-great-aunt.
    • The portrait Alphabittle shows Misty is of Shining Armor, Twilight Sparkle's older brother.
    • Zipp and Izzy bring Elder Flower to the abandoned airship hanger from A New Generation.
  • Dramatic Irony: The elder unicorn, Elderflower, relates a story about bats that tracks with what is known about how Twilight shielded Equestria from Opaline, but Sunny and Zipp don't draw the connection.
  • Green Around the Gills: Happens to Misty when Alphabittle spins her on the playground merry-go-round too fast.
  • Hidden Depths: Misty apparently got into quite a range of activities when she was a filly, even if she can't remember them now. Art appreciation, slam poetry, tree climbing, cave exploring, fire swallowing — and even weightlifting, if the box of dumbbells delivered to the Crystal Brighthouse is any indication.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: Alphabittle notes that Misty's room (which he has kept the same since she went missing) has a few "dust bunnicorns".
  • Literal-Minded: When Sunny notes that there's "a lot to unpack" concerning Misty's past, Alphabittle thinks she's referring to the multiple "Misty memory boxes" he has.
  • Loving a Shadow: Alphabittle's day of fun with Misty includes all the things he remembers her enjoying, unaware that she has become a very different pony while she was gone.
  • Mistaken for Exhibit: Pressured to compose a spoken poem, Misty stutters for several minutes and then runs off apologizing. The audience clap appreciatively afterward, Onyx declaring the act "a commentary on the loss of identity".
  • Pun: Alphabittle is on fine form in this episode.
    • He once made a special mystery tea for Misty which he dubbed "Misty's Mys-tea-ry".
    • As he reveals the surprise he arranged at the Brighthouse, he remarks "Ta-da-daah!"
  • The Reveal: Elder Flower tells Sunny and Zipp that the Wishing Tree in Bridlewood and the tree grown by the Mane Five and Misty in "Cutie Blossom Bash" are Together Trees, magic trees that connect through their roots and protect ponies.
  • Self-Applied Nickname: As she and Alphabittle are starting over, Misty says that she can be called "Tea" for short.
  • Senior Sleep-Cycle: Elder Flower briefly falls asleep during her conversation with Izzy and Zipp.
  • Understatement: Following a series of Gilligan Cuts showing Zipp pestering Misty for information about Opaline (the last of which features her literally yelling for Misty to tell her), Zipp admits that she has "come on a bit strong".
  • The Unsmile: Misty puts on a huge fake smile for Alphabittle's sake. So huge, in fact, that it hurts.
