Recap / Mr Robot S 03 E 05

Go To

One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, five, six...

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Angela successfully executes Stage 2 from the HSM.
  • Bavarian Fire Drill: Elliot attempts a few of these after he’s fired and needs to remain in the E-Corp building. He notably fails when trying to insert himself into a sales meeting when hiding from security, but is able to improvise by pretending he was on the wrong floor. He is successful at pretending to be from I.T. though.
  • Bystander Action-Horror Dissonance: Thanks to the simulated one-take format, we are forced to witness the E Corp riot from ground zero, which includes the terrified employees who have no stake in it and are (rightfully) fearing for their lives.
  • Cliffhanger: Elliot catches up with Angela in E Corp and confronts her about her treachery.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Elliott criticizes Samar's daily monologue of sexual braggadocio to his face. He then realizes he had intended to tell You that.
  • Double-Meaning Title: A runtime error is a type of program execution error that is foreseen by the program's developer, but can not be prevented. One such error can result from running out of memory. Now, what (or better yet, who) does that remind you of?
  • Eye Scream: The fsociety mask that Angela wears still has pepper spray residue on it, which leaves her gasping for air and her eyes bloodshot.
  • Internal Reveal: Elliot finds out that Darlene was spying for the FBI, and Angela was working for Mr Robot and Tyrell.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: Some of the E Corp protestors, who are actually Dark Army goons sent to agitate the crowd and incite violence. Naturally, this doesn't stop some of the actual protestors from participating in the violence, however, and Angela is nearly swarmed by a group of them.
  • Meaningful Background Event: In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, you can see Elliot running to the code-signing machine behind Angela as she sneaks her way out.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: In order to hide from E Corp's security, Elliot crashes a meeting where he claims to have misjudged the floor he was supposed to go to.
  • Oh, Crap!: Plenty of moments to be found here:
    • Elliot learning that the Dark Army attempted to run stage two.
    • Elliot after learning he is getting fired.
    • The protest exploding into a full-scale riot that takes over E Corp.
    • Angela running into Elliot after leaving the HSM server room.
  • The Oner: This episode is notable for being filmed entirely as a simulated long take.
  • Powder Keg Crowd: The protest outside E Corp turns violent immediately after a bottle is thrown at one of the riot control officers.
  • Riddle for the Ages: What is in that damn bag?!
  • Shout-Out:
    • Elliot's badge ID number is 072391. This happens to be the date on which people reported seeing news stories about Nelson Mandela's death in an African prison. This in turn led to the popularization of the "Mandela effect", a theory regarding the existence of alternate universes.
    • One of Angela and Irving's challenge-responses is "Moxie" and "Marlinspike". Moxie Marlinspike is a computer security researcher who, among many things, co-authored the Signal Protocol, founded the Open Whisper Systems software organization, and headed Twitter's security team.
  • Technologically Blind Elders: Subverted. Elliot sees a sixty-ish woman sniffing glue at her desk and tries to con his way onto her terminal with a made-up security issue. She's too technologically savvy to fall for it, although she does direct him to another (younger) worker, who is technology blind.
