Recap / Little Princess S 2 E 24 I Want To Play Football

Go To

On a rainy, windy day, the Princess is bored because she has played all her games repeatedly. Scruff then brings her rubber ball into her room, inspiring her to play football with it despite the narrator and Puss's doubts. However, she startles the Maid into dropping her laundry, and the Maid tells her not to play with it indoors as it's apparently "too big". The Princess asks what she can do instead, the Maid suggests tidying her room, which the Princess is none too pleased with. So, she decides to play outside with it instead, despite the weather.

The King and Queen are moving a statue of the Queen's Great-Great Granny and run into the Princess. She tells them she's going outside, but they disallow it as, according to the Admiral who's just come in, it is now gale force ten. Then, the statue gets put in the living room, but everyone but the Queen finds it ugly.

Meanwhile, the Princess and Scruff are still bored and the former is sulking, while Puss is trying to entertain himself by reading. She decides to play with the football indoors anyway, but only for a little bit. However, she accidentally knocks the head off the statue. The adults, hearing the crash, come running but the Princess doesn't let them into the living room, pretending that she's planning a surprise.

The narrator asks why she didn't tell the truth, and the Princess explains that she'd get into trouble. She and Puss reattach the head (albeit backwards), but unfortunately the General comes in and starts prancing about with Nessie, knocking it off again. The adults again hear the noise and run into the living room. The Queen screams when she sees the headless statue and asks what happened. The Princess tries lying that it was the wind, then a bird, then a monster, only to break down crying and run into her bedroom.

The King asks if it was really a monster, and the Princess says no and fesses up. Then, she awkwardly, but sincerely, apologises to the Queen and they mend the statue with modelling clay. Finally, everyone plays football in the hallway, using a ball of yarn as the ball.

This episode provides examples of

  • Big "NO!": The Princess shouts, "NO!" when the statue literally loses its head (oddly, the grownups hear the "boom" as the Chef puts it, but not the big no).
  • Blatant Lies: First, the Princess tries to claim the wind blew off the statue's head even though they're inside. Then she claims it was a bird, then a monster.
  • Buffy Speak: The Chef describes the sound of the statue head hitting the floor as a "boom boom noise".
  • Faint in Shock: Puss passes out when the statue's head gets knocked off.
  • Hesitation Equals Dishonesty: When the Princess lies about the statue, she often pauses and stammers.
  • Howl of Sorrow: Scruff howls when he finds out he can't go out and play with the Princess.
  • I Don't Think That's Such a Good Idea: When the Princess thinks of playing football, the narrator says, "Uh, Princess, should you be playing football indoors?", while Puss shakes his head and meows dubiously. Then, when she considers playing with it indoors again, the narrator says, "Are you sure that's a good idea?".
  • Incredibly Lame Fun: When the Princess suggests an alternative to playing football, the Maid suggests tidying her room, making the Princess groan.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: When the Princess cries, she keeps making gulping sounds.
  • Rain, Rain, Go Away: The main plot of this episode is the Princess trying to entertain herself on a wet day.
  • Speak in Unison:
    • When the adults are telling white lies about the Queen's statue, they say, "Lovely!" in unison.
    • When the Queen suggests a game of football, the others say, "Football?!" in unison.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: The Princess's final lie is "It was a monster! IT WAS!!".
