A rape victim's father (Jeremy Irons), a noted sexual psychiatry therapist working with sex offenders and who may be a sex offender himself, refuses to help the detectives get the information they need to solve a case when it's suspected that one of the offenders in his therapy circle may be the one who raped his daughter.
This episode provides examples of:
- The Alcoholic: Dr. Jackson is a recovered sex addict as well as a recovered alcoholic.
- Ephebophile: Dr. Jackson bedded his daughter's 17 year old friend. Although she's of legal age, she's still within the range this disorder applies to (15-19). In his case, though, he had no specific preference for younger partners; he was just generally addicted to sex and would fulfill that need with any woman that would have him.
- Guilt Complex: The episode introduces Captain Jackson, a psychiatrist who is looking for a way to cure sexual addiction. This came about from an unfortunate summer where he believes he may have raped his lesbian daughter, prompting the two to become estranged, but can't remember due to his own struggles with sex and alcohol addiction at the time. As it turned out, he actually had consensual sex with his daughter's best friend. The estrangement was because his daughter was pissed that he slept with her first love.
- Jailbait Taboo: When Dr. Jackson realizes that he had sex with his daughter's best friend, she assured him that not only did he not rape her, she was 17 (the legal age of consent in New York State) and therefore, he didn't even commit statutory rape either.
- Naughty Birdwatching: Two boys are spying on their neighbors with binoculars when they see a man raping a woman and beating up her girlfriend. To their credit, they immediately report it as soon as they realize what's happening.
- Rape Portrayed as Redemption: The detectives realize that this is what the Serial Rapist is trying to achieve when they notice that all of his victims were sexually assaulted in the past.
- Red Herring: The first ten minutes of the episode are spent investigating whether this is a Homophobic Hate Crime because the women are a lesbian couple or because one of them is a fertility specialist.
- Stacy's Mom: In a gender-flipped case, this is what really happened at Falmouth; Jackson had consensual sex with Anne's best friend, who Anne was also in love with.
