Recap / Law & Order S6 E7 "Humiliation"

Go To

Police patrolling a red-light district find the corpse of sex worker Gwyn George. The victim had $2000 with her, yet no one stole it - suggesting that her death wasn't a robbery or to do with drugs. So Briscoe and Curtis trace her clients. They suspect Dr. Mark Danforth, a successful plastic surgeon. He withdrew $2000 before the murder and his gun, which is now missing, matches the murder weapon. He is charged with her murder. McCoy, Kincaid and the detectives think that Gwyn, who had a history of blackmail, tried the same trick on Danforth and so he killed her.

Danforth's wife insists she's the one who withdrew the money, but her story doesn't add up. In the absence of any concrete evidence that Mrs. Danforth is lying, McCoy gives up on the case and Kincaid takes over. Mrs. Danforth is unable to keep her story straight at trial, and Danforth is convicted. But Kincaid suspects that Mrs. Danforth might have deliberately tried to get her husband convicted in revenge for his cheating; a little more investigation supports this theory.

Kincaid and McCoy come up with a plot to tell the Danforths that there will be a re-trial due to a witness error. Mrs. Danforth now produces the gun, which she says she found at her mother's house the night before. However, Kincaid had the detectives follow her and they can prove that she didn't go there. Kincaid confronts the Danforths with the knowledge that Mrs. Danforth is the killer and framed her husband. Mrs. Danforth rages that he deserved it, since he was constantly cheating on her. Kincaid offers a plea deal rather than take a chance with a jury.
