Recap / Jackie Chan Adventures S 3 E 1 Re Enter The J Team

Go To

A criminal mastermind named Bartholomew Chang, who is responsible for large scale theft and smuggling of Jade (The stone, not the niece), is holding a tournament to find the most worthy fighters to be his bodyguard. In an attempt to foil his plan, Captain Black (at Jade's request) has all the members of the J-Team participate so they can infiltrate his hide-out. (The basic plot is copied off of Bruce Lee's Movie Enter the Dragon.)

This episode provides examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: Jackie Chan made his film debut in Enter the Dragon, as a guard getting his neck snapped by Bruce Lee himself.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: Even Tohru, the largest member of the J-Team who usually towers over even most adults, is dwarfed by Chang’s sumo wrestlers. He still manages to defeat them though.
  • Artificial Limbs: Chang misses his right hand. According to one competitor, he lost it in an iron fist competition. He has a variety of artificial hands equipped with weapons or household objects as a replacement, his favorite being a Jade hand.
  • Bookends: The episode begins with Jade realizing that her summer vacation is almost ending after she wakes up from a dream about her having a report about it and ends when she reads her report on how she spent it.
  • Brick Break: Jackie is entered into a competition of breaking stacks of stone tablets. He manages to break one stack (crying out in pain in the process), but is ordered to break a bigger stack and breaks his hands in the process.
  • Broken Win/Loss Streak: The sumo wrestler that Tohru defeated claims that he has never lost a match until today.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: El Toro Fuerte does pretty well at first, but then he instinctively goes to bounce off non-existent ropes, causing him to fall out of the ring and lose by Ring Out.
Viper: This ain't Lucha Libre, handsome.
    El Toro: Force of habit.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: When Tohru defeats Chang’s sumo wrestlers, he gains their respect, causing them to betray Chang and help the J-Team in the final battle with Chang’s guards.
  • Dream Sequence: The episode opens with one Jade is having, of fighting some Shadowkhan only to be dragged to her classroom and told to present an essay that she hasn't written yet.
  • Framing Device: The end of the episode reveals that Jade was essentially telling her class the events of this episode as what she did over summer vacation.
  • Heroic Rematch: The J-Team face off against the opponents they lost to previously in the climax of the episode, and this time manage to defeat them.
  • Honor Before Reason: Knowing Jackie prefers to fight in self-defense, Jade signs him up for the iron fist competition without considering Jackie isn’t fit to smash bricks with his bare hands.
  • Kid Has a Point: Jade is the one who suggests to Captain Black that it's better to recruit the J-Team for the operation instead of just Jackie. Jackie tries to apologize to Black that his niece has such an "active imagination", only for Black to be immediately on board.
  • Latex Perfection: The elderly people working in Chang’s factory all turn out to be bodyguards in disguise.
  • Running Gag: Almost every time someone mentions the stone Jade, Jade (the character) pops up thinking they are talking about her.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: To the outside world, Chang presents himself as a philanthropist.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Of the film Enter the Dragon.
  • Worf Had the Flu: All members of the J-Team suffer from this, which causes all but Tohru to lose their initial fights: Viper isn’t used to having to wear a judo gi with wide sleeves since she normally wears tight spandex suits, El Toro is only used to fighting inside wrestling rings, and Jackie has trouble with breaking stones with his bare hands. When they have to fight their opponents from the tournament again later on, these restrictions are not in place and they do manage to win. Well, except for Jackie. Since his hands were still broken, El Toro and Tohru had to step in to take down his opponent.
