Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E48 "No Sprain, No Gain"

Go To

Hamster, Gretel and Fred have to locate a peculiar, spider-esque jewel thief, while Kevin, who has sprained his ankle, stays in bed while streaming three different TV shows at once, to avoid embarrassment for the girly, pink unicorn-themed knee scooter he received from the hospital.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: You can't stay in your comfort zone forever.
  • All Webbed Up: Since Itsy Bitsy can shoot web from her arm pits, Hamster, Gretel and Fred naturally fall victim to this.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The three streams Kevin is watching are a nature documentary in which a gorilla uses a lemon to solvate an apple from dirty spider webs, an ad for a deodorant called Pore Blocker 4000, and an episode of Yuko Cheerleader Warrior Attack 7 in which Yuko uses a water gun to defeat a fire demon. Kevin uses lemon juice in water guns to free Hamster, Gretel and Fred, and the Pore Blocker deodorant to block Itsy Bitsy from shooting her web.
  • Concealing Canvas: Hamster, Gretel and Fred notice a life-size print of Whistler's Mother hanging in the insect-themed jewelry museum. Realizing that it shouldn't be there, they find a tunnel behind it, which leads to Itsy Bitsy's lair in the abandoned video arcade.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Double Subverted. When Itsy Bitsy reveals her face, it looks totally normal. Gretel was worried that she was going to be some sort of gross spider-human hybrid... and then Itsy Bitsy's hair spreads apart, revealing it to be spider legs, as well as hiding two extra pair of eyes.
  • Enmity with an Object: Kevin broke his ankle tripping over the ottoman, claiming that it's had been after him for years. Hamster places the ottoman next to the doorway to make Kevin think it's coming back to finish him off.
  • Handicapped Badass: While he had to use a knee scooter, Kevin was still able to help Gretel, Hamster, and Fred stop Itsy Bitsy from robbing a jewelry museum.
  • Implausible Boarding Skills: While Kevin initially shops for some items required to beat Itsy Bitsy with reluctance due to his girly knee scooter, he finds that it's not as embarrassing for him as he thought it would be and is able to pull some sick tricks with it at the skate park alongside some other skaters. He's still doing all of this with a sprained ankle.
  • Injured Limb Episode: Kevin's ankle is sprained, so his foot is cast in an injury boot. Unlike most Injured Limb Episodes, however, Kevin can still go out if he uses a knee scooter, but he initially chooses not to due to his knee scooter being rather childish.
  • Projectile Webbing: Once a failed jewel thief, Itsy Bitsy can now shoot web from her arm pits, thanks to the same aliens that gave Hamster and Gretel superpowers.
  • Something We Forgot: After Itsy Bitsy is caught and everyone leaves, Fred is still webbed up in the arcade, calling to be rescued. Subverted when Hamster comes back in the closing moments of the episode to rescue her.
  • Squick: In-Universe, this is Gretel's reaction to Itsy Bitsy shooting webs from her armpits.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Itsy Bitsy's spider webbing is about 2% stronger than Gretel herself, making it surprisingly similar to Arthouse's film trap, which is also 2% stronger than Gretel. This is also revealed in a similar exchange, with Gretel trapped in a similar way, too.
  • Weird Trade Union: Turns out you have to take an exam to become a jewel thief. Itsy Bitsy's backstory is that she had just failed hers when the aliens give her powers.
