Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E47 "The Unnatural History of Dr. MedusaSaurus Ph.D."

Go To

When Gretel and Bailey visit the Natural History Museum, a peculiar paleontologist managed to break free from a tar pit after being given superpowers by aliens per accident. With the ability to give life to dinosaur skeletons, she decides to get revenge on the person who owns the museum.

Tropes:

  • Answer Cut: Our heroes need a real battery to activate the electromagnet on display at the museum. Hamster instantly flies off and comes back with a car battery; when asked where he got it, he says, "I know a guy." Cut to Kevin stranded in the middle of the freeway, as Hamster had taken the minivan's battery.
  • Anti-Villain: Julie Jennings has all the rights to be pissed at Melvin Horsegobble for accidentally pushing her in the tar pit all those years ago and taking the credit for all her findings, as well as the museum being named after him, but her methods of using dangerous dinosaur skeletons to terrorize the museum make her the antagonist of the story, at least until the very end.
  • Artistic License – Paleontology: Despite being a paleontologist, Jennings thinks T. rex has a brain the size of a walnut as stereotyped among dinosaurs (the only dinosaur that was seriously believed to have a brain that small was Stegosaurus, and even that was disputed as its brain was actually twice the size of a walnut).
  • Broken Pedestal: Bailey speaks rather positively of Dr. Horsegobble for founding the museum, but she's disgusted when learning the truth from Dr. Jennings.
  • Dem Bones: Jennings can use her superpowers to animate the dinosaur bone constructions in the museum into her minions.
  • Prehensile Hair: The aliens' superpowers gave Jennings' hair made of dinosaur bones, akin to the snake hair of gorgons (hence Gretel's nickname for her, "Dr. MedusaSaurus").
  • Shown Their Work: The Tyrannosaurus and dromaeosaurid skeletons are shown with wishbones (now known to be a trait among theropods as opposed to just birds), something that is almost always omitted in popular media.
  • Something We Forgot: At the end of the episode, Gretel asks where Kevin is, since he should have arrived by now. Cut to Kevin, still stranded on the freeway due to Hamster taking the minivan's battery, ordering a pizza.
