Go To

"Five's A Crowd" is an episode in the fifth season of Full House.

Danny's initial approval of D.J. going on a date gives way to panic when Kimmy reveals that her date is a heavy-metal band member and they're going to a drive-in for the date, causing him, with Jesse and Joey in tow, to "save" her and leaves Rebecca to attend the television award ceremony alone. Kimmy, meanwhile, is tasked with babysitting Michelle and the twin boys, only for Stephanie to step in when Kimmy has trouble with her responsibility.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • All Men Are Perverts: Implied, then averted. Danny fears this trope when Kimmy admits that DJ's date "never hears the word 'no'", leading to him, Jesse, and Joey going after the couple. However, when DJ admits that she doesn't want to "get comfortable" with her date, he's disappointed but respects her boundaries and instead goes to get popcorn.
  • Badly Battered Babysitter: Kimmy shows strong aversion to feeding Nicky and Alex with baby food because she had to eat the stuff herself in the past, so Stephanie steps in... for a fee. Near the end of the episode, the amount of times Stephanie steps in to feed or change the babies ends up causing Kimmy to lose the entirety of the money she was promised for babysitting to Stephanie.
    Kimmy: What a ripoff.
Stephanie: Aunt Becky, can we make Kimmy our regular babysitter?
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: D.J. not telling Danny the whole truth about her date causes Danny, with Jesse and Joey in tow, to seek her and her date out at the drive-in in an attempt to "rescue" her after he gets more details out of Kimmy, ruining D.J.'s date in a very embarrassing way. After the date ends, Danny apologizes to D.J., saying that he should have been more trusting to D.J., while D.J. admits that she should have been more truthful to Danny.
  • Hope Spot: Played for Laughs.
    • Kimmy spends the whole episode as a Badly Battered Babysitter to Nicky and Alex because she was promised payment to do the job, only to end up losing all the money she was promised for to Stephanie as the result of Stephanie taking over much of the babysitting responsibilities (not for free, of course) due to her needing Stephanie's help for her job.
    • Upon Rebecca returning home with a trophy in hand at the end of the episode, Danny takes hold of it and says: "Vindicated after four long years!" Rebecca, however, takes the trophy from him and hands it to Joey, saying that the show that won the award is "The Ranger Joe Show" instead of "Wake Up, San Francisco".
  • Ironic Echo: Played for Laughs. Danny initially believes the show that won the award was "Wake Up, San Francisco" upon seeing the trophy Rebecca holds, and so takes the trophy and claims "Vindicated after four long years!" from said belief, only for Rebecca to clarify that the show that won the award was "The Ranger Joe Show" instead, takes the trophy from Danny, and hands it to Joey, who claims: "Vindicated after four long... months."
  • Literal Metaphor: As D.J. discovers Jesse, Danny, and Joey at the front seats of the very vehicle her date drives while her date is getting refreshments, she's in a panic and wishes for them to leave before her date comes back, and part of the ensuing dialogue has this trope in mind:
D.J.: Picture yourself in my shoes.
Joey: I'd love to. You got a left and a right?note
  • Reactive Continuous Scream: After D.J. turns down the advances of her date (which he takes well enough), the boy decides to get popcorn so they can watch the movie being shown at the drive-in. D.J. then pulls back the curtain separating the storage space from the front seats of the van, only to find Danny, Jesse, and Joey present. The shock of such unexpected discovery causes them to scream at each other in reaction.
  • Tempting Fate: Late in the episode, Michelle takes a bite out of a dog biscuit due to sheer curiosity about how it might taste, resulting in her spitting it out in disgust at once.
Michelle: [to Comet] I should have known. You drink from the toilet.
  • Unwanted Rescue: Played for both comedy and drama, as Danny, with Jesse and Joey in tow, seek out D.J. at the drive-in to get her out of the date after Kimmy informs him that her date is a heavy-metal band member with the reputation of never being turned down by any girl before, only to find out after getting there that D.J. is the first girl to have turned down his advances and he took it well enough, meaning D.J. was never in need of a "rescue" in the first place.
