Tropes:
- Alternate History: During a v-mail, Dani casually mentions that there are three Star Trek series. In real life, there were five live-action shows by 2003. Ron Moore explained that in his mind, thanks to the boost given to the sci-fi genre by the continued space race, Paramount launches Phase II and then starts the film series with Wrath of Khan upon the show's conclusion in the early 80s.
- Boom, Headshot!: Sergei is killed by a KGB agent in his motel room, making it look as if he Ate His Gun.
- Hope Spot: To escape the KGB, Sergei tempts Margot with the prospect of them fleeing to Brazil together, where they could feasibly contribute to the nation's space program. He does not live long enough to get her answer.
- Product Placement: In what is probably the most heartbreaking usage of this trope ever, Sergei is assassinated just before he can enjoy a Big Mac from McDonald's.
- The Reveal: Ed comes clean with Kelly, revealing his degenerative illness and his desire to remain on Mars so that he doesn't end up in a nursing home, unable to serve any meaningful purpose.
- Title Drop: Sergei suggests to Margo that they can both flee to Brazil and help with their space program.
- Trekkie: Dani promises that her grandbaby is going to be a Trekkie like her.
