- Pragmatic Villainy: This is invoked by Dev to make sure Sam is on the asteroid mission. He claims that he does not want her on the mission but if he fired or demoted someone involved in a labor dispute, he'd be opening himself up to massive lawsuits and bad PR back on Earth. Thus, it's "in his best interests" to keep Sam on board.
- How the Mighty Have Fallen: Sergei, once a brilliant Soviet engineer, is now a high school science teacher.
- We Used to Be Friends: Margo is subjected to this when she returns to NASA. Nuri gives her the cold shoulder, and Aleida shuts down Margo asking about her son.
- Wham Line: Sergei reveals to Margo that Irina was his handler at the KGB and thus is the one directly responsible for all their misery.
- Wham Shot: Sam sees that Ranger One has the discriminator on the flight deck in full view of everyone, making it more difficult to replace.
- Witness Protection: Sergei is implied to have been placed into this by the government; given a new namenote , and teaching physics at a high school instead of working with NASA.
