Carter: Can I ask you why you built a flock of robo-birds?

Jo: The high school Science Fair. It's like Armageddon with acne.

Debris starts raining down on Eureka on the day of the school's science fair, and there may be a connection to Zoe.

Tropes

  • Academic Alpha Bitch: Megan and her two friends. Zoe tells Jo they've been bullying her since she outscored Megan in a test, because students who attend Tesla because their parents are "normal" employees of GD aren't supposed to be smart.
  • Black Comedy Animal Cruelty: Carter comes across Taggart, who is in Manly Tears about whatever's wrong with his geese that made them fly off course. He has a goose in his lap as he speaks, and as he finishes he tearfully breaks the goose's neck! Carter is horrified, but Taggart turns the bird over and opens its belly to show him the mechanisms inside, revealing that it's a robot goose.
  • Blatant Lies: After Henry mentions a Noodle Incident involving Area 51.
    Jack: Area 51 is real?
    Henry: [Nodding] No!
  • Calling the Young Man Out: After her mother is caught plagiarising her, Megan tries to use it as a "get out of jail free" card when her mother tells her off for being bitchy to Zoe. Her mother retorts that she may have made a bad decision due to job pressure, but that doesn't excuse Megan treating people like that.
  • Crippling the Competition: Megan sabotages Zoe's experiment by releasing her flies. After some encouragement from Jo, Zoe gets her own back by messing with Megan's energy beam, causing it to magnetically attract objects from around the hall while she's trying to impress Stark.
  • Oh, Crap!: Carter, when Zoe wins a car.
  • Plagiarism in Fiction: Megan is accused of plagiarising her mother's work for GD. In fact, her mother was feeling the pressure at work and plagiarised her.
  • Ranked by I.Q.: Tesla High, but all of Eureka, really. Barely an hour after Carter trolls Café Diem by bragging about his 111 score, thinking it's a percentage, Zoe is being heckled by the Heathers as "111".
  • Running Gag: Carter's Jeep is hit through the engine block by space debris.
  • Science Fair: Due to the genius factor in Eureka this is Serious Business for the students, for whom the top prize is a GD internship of their choice.
  • Shout-Out: Zoe's bullies are referred to as Heathers.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Played With. Jo announces the Science Fair is the most dangerous day of the year and wears kevlar, plus Zoe has bullies who are not above sabatoging her experiment, but at the end of the day Megan comes through and helps fix the disaster of the week.
  • Teen Genius: Zoe's IQ is established as 157, making her a genius only a few points below Einstein, although she lies and tells Carter it's 112, one point above his score.
  • Technobabble: Obviously.
Megan: Mom! You fired my energy beam through an electrostatic magnetofield? Duh!
