  • Addictive Magic/G-Rated Drug: The sketchbook effectively serves as this for Gard. Under its influence, he stops eating, grows increasingly manic in his behavior, and is only free of it when Megumi finally stops enabling him and makes him realize how harmful it is.
  • Brutal Honesty: What ultimately breaks the spell over Gard when Megumi finally tells her that his "improvements" aren't making things better for anybody.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Erin eats the whole sketchbook without ill effects.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Whenever Gard uses the magic found in the dark sketchbook, his eyes glow a dark purple color and he becomes more and more obsessed with making everything pretty.
  • Good Eyes, Evil Eyes: When Gard is succumbing to the influence of the spell, his eyes glow dark purple, and the usually enormous irises shrink. When Megumi is showering him with kind words of praise and support, his eyes return to their normal limpid pools of blue.
  • Heartbreak and Ice Cream: Non-romantic example. Gard's breakdown when his sketchbook was destroyed by J.Z. drives him to pig out on chocolates, complete with "om nom nom" sounds.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Most of the problems would have been avoided if Megumi had been honest with Gard when he started going over the top with the magical changes.
  • Power Makes Your Voice Deep: Under the dark effects of the sketchbook, Gard's voice becomes much deeper and more sinister.
  • Sanity Slippage/With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: The more Gard uses the dark sketchbook's power, the more deranged he becomes.
