Tropes

  • Adaptational Explanation: According to D.K. in the "Legend of the Crystal Coconut" VHS, Cutlass and Green Croc managed to get back on their ship in the end, while Klump and Krusha got off the hard way.
  • Expy Coexistence: DK mentions during his song to Inka that King Kong, who DK himself is based on, is his idol, and that he has an autographed picture of the ape.
  • Failure Montage: Klump and Krusha's attempts to return the Crystal Coconut plays out over one of these. It takes them a total of 19 tries, most of them unseen, before Cranky takes the Coconut back.
  • Gravity Is a Harsh Mistress: Klump and Krusha's Failure Montage to return the Crystal Coconut begins with a trap door opening under them, they have time to notice and try and scramble before gravity kicks in.
  • I Warned You: DK keeps warning Skurvy to stop mocking his status as future ruler, getting madder as the pirate continues, before he finally just throws the Crystal Coconut right at Skurvy's face, knocking his bothersome tooth out of his mouth in the process.
DK: But...but I'm the future ruler of Kongo Bongo.
    Skurvy: (laughs) 'Future ruler,' you?!
    DK: I'm warning you.
Skurvy: (mockingly) Oooh... Well, shiver me timbers!
    DK: I'm still warning you...!
Skurvy: (laughs) That's a good one matey! Me Great Great Great Grandpappy, may he rot in Hell, would be rollin'! He loved a good joke! And you're the biggest, ugliest one there's ever been! Har-har-har! 'Future ruler!'
DK: You want it?! You GOT it!!
(DK throws the coconut at Skurvy, hitting his face and knocking the aching tooth out)
  • I Was Just Joking: Diddy's reaction when DK considers giving the Crystal Coconut away.
  • Large Ham: Both Diddy and Cranky have over-the-top reactions to DK's idea of giving away the Crystal Coconut, so that he may learn the secrets of it.
DK: Little buddy, I'm giving you my tie collection!
Diddy: I think Inka Dinka Doo was probably thinking about something more important than that, DK.
DK: What's more important than my tie collection?
Diddy: The Crystal Coconut, for one!
(a light bulb goes off on DK's head as Diddy laughs)
DK: That's it! I'll have to give the Crystal Coconut away!
    Diddy: I WAS KIDDING!
    DK: I'm not.
    • Then later...
    Cranky: You did WHAT!?
DK: I wanted to know all the secrets...
Cranky: SO YOU GAVE THE COCONUT AWAY TO KING K. ROOL?! What are you thinking?!
  • The Legend of X
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: After Inka-Dinka-Doo tells him that "to know everything, you must give up everything," Donkey Kong, in hopes of learning the secrets of the Crystal Coconut, just gives King K. Rool the coconut under the logic that once he knows the Coconut's secrets, he won't need it anymore. When DK returns and tells the idol the good news, Inka-Dinka-Doo repeats the phrase again, only angrier, as his way of saying that's NOT what he meant. Diddy lampshades this by saying, "Uh-oh, I think you goofed, DK!"
  • Noble Demon: Skurvy's Pirate Oath involves an addendum where he'll owe anybody who rids him of his toothache "on [his] honor." Whenever he says this, at least one person in the room lampshades how pirates don't have honor, but he follows through on his promise by giving DK back the Crystal Coconut when he knocks out his tooth.
  • Origin Story: For Kaptain Skurvy.
  • Precision F-Strike: One of the more infamous moments of the episode has Skurvy point out that his Great Great Great Grandpappy is in Hell.
Skurvy: (laughs) That's a good one matey! Me Great Great Great Grandpappy, may he rot in Hell, would be rollin'!
  • Red Herring: At the beginning of the episode, Inka Dinka Doo ominously proclaims, "THE TIME HAS COME!!" implying that DK must now assume the throne of ruler. No such thing happens.
  • Running Gag: The "Pirate's Oath" routine. It slowly becomes Running Gagged as Skurvy abridges it more and more.
  • Too Clever by Half: Upon learning that DK gave the Coconut willingly, K.Rool concludes it's part of a plot and gives it back. When DK shows up demanding the Coconut back, K.Rool realizes there was no plot and he just threw away the Crystal Coconut when it was handed to him on a silver-platter. By then, Klump and Krusha had already given it back and they are all back where they started.
  • Unexplained Recovery: Somehow, Skurvy's ship is in perfect working order after it sank in his debut episode.
  • What Were You Thinking?: Cranky's word-for-word reaction when he discovers that DK, having been told to give up everything to know everything, gives the Crystal Coconut to King K. Rool.
  • You Are Not Ready: At the end, Cranky tells DK that he's clearly not ready for the all of the secrets of the Crystal Coconut.
Cranky: Maybe you're not supposed to know yet. Look at how much trouble your snooping's already caused! I mean, do you wanna run, before you walk?
