Recap / Dogs In Space S 1 E 1 Fetch

Go To

Captain Garbage and the Pluto crew have helped to travel the stars in order to find the perfect planet for humans. After 14 [dog] years of failure, however, the M-Bark's Council of Canines places them on lockdown until further notice. This doesn't stop Garbage from continuing his mission, even if it means going against his superiors' orders.

Fetch contains examples of:

  • Always Someone Better: On the surface, Happy appears to be the perfect dog captain. He returns from his missions, perhaps not finding a new home, but he has leads for the mission (and gift bags!). Meanwhile, Garbage usually ends his missions in a fight.
  • Brutal Honesty: Garbage messes up negotiations when he reveals bluntly that the humans don't want to "share" the colony or rent it. They will want to own the planet, and the aliens can be their "best friends".
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with a missing Captain Kira appearing to the crew, after she has trapped the others and disarmed Captain Garbage.
  • Cool People Rebel Against Authority: The Council suspends Team Pluto after their recent failure. However, Garbage suggests to go against their orders in hopes that the unidentified "ghost planet" they passed will be suitable for humans.
  • Distress Call: On the ghost planet, Garbage and his crew find one from a previous pilot that crashed there, who was also a sapient dog. Captain Kira asks despairingly if anyone was looking for her. Soon they run into the pilot, that has set snare traps around her fallen ship.
  • Do Wrong, Right: Second-in-command Stella would rather "stay" and follow orders. She knows that Garbage is going to explore the "ghost" planet anyway, however, and is going to need some help.*
  • Driving Question: The pilot, no pun intended, has a few:
    • Are there humans still on Earth, those that sent their beloved pets into space?
    • Why is the "ghost planet" not appearing on the dogs' maps?
  • Epic Fail: The first five minutes show Garbage's negotiation with bug-like aliens end in disaster after accidentally shooting the queen's pet. The Council hasn't forgotten the other times he failed spectacularly and suspends him and the Pluto crew.
  • Four-Fingered Hands: Garbage takes a moment to demonstrate that the humans gave the dogs thumbs.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: While Captain/Councilor Happy of Team Venus mocks Garbage's team for another Epic Fail, Chonies reminds him that Team Venus hasn't found a suitable planet either. Despite that, Happy one-ups them by obtaining leads from the natives (as well as bring back gift bags).
  • Imagine Spot: Garbage imagines himself back on Earth, where Chelsea and the other humans (as well as an audience resembling corgis) praise him for completing their mission, while turning Happy back into a normal dog for not trusting him.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: Even if Garbage is at risk of losing his Captain seat for defying council orders, Stella would rather join him and have that happen than learn he died because she stayed behind.
  • Shoot Out the Lock: Nomi does this when Stella is unable to hack the bug aliens' door, while Chonies is in trouble, and it works... technically.
  • Theme Naming: A common command for a dog to retrieve something (like a stick or ball). PRATS has sent dogs into space to "Fetch" them a new planet to live on.
  • Wham Shot: When the crew leaves their ship on the "ghost planet," vines appear and tether their vehicle in place, trapping them. No one notices.
