Recap / Diagnosis Murder S 4 E 14 Murder Two

Go To

When Jesse makes a medical decision against fellow doctor Eric Spindler's orders, Spindler summons him to court with a medical malpractice lawsuit. In order to save Jesse, Mark turns to the best attorney he knows; Ben Matlock.

While Matlock is still sore with Mark over something in their past, he agrees to take Jesse's case nonetheless. While things don't go well at first, things drastically change when Spindler is seemingly murdered by his girlfriend Jeri Murdico. Then when it is revealed that Spindler was dead before Jeri hit him, suspicion falls right back onto Jesse, now facing charges of murder. Matlock takes the case once more, now more in his element, and through his and the gang's investigation, find that the rabbit hole of Eric's murder goes far deeper than they think.

"Murder Two" displays symptoms of the following tropes:

  • Asshole Victim: Eric Spindler abandoned his girlfriend because she got pregnant and accused her of wanting his money when she got pregnant.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Barry McCarthy tended to get jealous of Paula with other men, so much so that he actually hit her when he caught her dancing with another man at a bar. It helps sell the idea that he is the one who murdered her.
  • Crossover:
    • With Matlock, having the title character defend Jesse.
    • Alluded to with one of the pay-per-view movies Jack watched, Barney Meets Godzilla.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Looking at the bill Jack Gardner racked up, we can see two movies he bought on pay-per-view, being Jurassic Sharknote  and Barney Meets Godzilla.
  • Gold Digger: When he finds out Jeri has no plans to abort their baby, he accuses her of being after his money. What a charmer.
  • Inheritance Murder: Paula McCarthy was killed so that her sister Debbie would be the only inheritor when their sick father finally passed on.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Eric and Jeri apparently conceived her baby while having sex "in the Pacific Ocean".
  • Money Dumb: Once again, Mark is revealed to be terrible when it comes to investments. The sore spot he and Matlock have is over the fact that Mark convinced the latter to invest all his money into 8-tracks. It did not pan out.
  • Noodle Incident: Alluded to when Jeri tells Eric she's pregnant.
Eric: You were on birth control.
Jeri: Not that time in the Pacific Ocean.
  • Obfuscating Postmortem Wounds: When Jeri was originally leaving Eric's house after giving him the poisoned wine, she was apporached by his neighbor Eddie Price. Figuring she'd be the top suspect once Eric's body was found, she came back hours later pretending to be drunk and furious, bursting into Eric's house with a spare key. She created a racket in order to attract Eddie over, then whacked his dead body with a lamp as Eddie watched. This way, she would be considered off the hook when the monocaine was discovered in Eric's system.
  • Sibling Murder: Paula McCarthy killed on her sister's orders by her brother-in-law.
  • Special Guest: Andy Griffith as Matlock, of course.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Dr. Spindler was killed with monocaine being poured into a bottle of wine for him to drink.
  • Till Murder Do Us Part: Debbie drowned her husband Jack in the hotel's pool.
