An Amish girl comes to the station asking the detectives to solve the 2006 mystery of her missing sister, Anna Gunden, who suddenly stopped writing home after leaving the community on Rumspringa.
Tropes:
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: Deconstructed. Amish girl Anna loved Vince because he was Tall, Dark, and Handsome, much edgier and more exciting to be with than the pious, boring Amish boys back home. But later she finds that bad boys have their downsides, too.
- Bilingual Bonus: The victim was Amish and experiencing the rite of passage Rumspringa. The word Rumspringa translates into English as “running around”, hence the episode title.
- Bittersweet Ending: By solving Anna's murder, the detectives allowed her mother and sister to finally learn what happened to her, and bring home Anna's body so that she could be buried in her community. Also, Sarah can now continue her Rumspringa for herself. On the other hand, any chance of Jakob being accepted back in his community is truly gone after what he did came to light. At the very least, the detective informed his parents so that they could come and say farewell to their son.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Anna's boyfriend, Vince, is this. He acts as a decent boyfriend to her but he later rapes her best friend Rachel and lies to Anna about his intentions.
- Child by Rape: This is how Rachel gets pregnant with her and Vince’s son.
- Continuity Nod: In the ending, Anna's case box is put next to Maurice Hall's box.
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Jakob is seen crying in his mother's arms after admitting to Anna’s murder.
- Give the Baby a Father: Presumably, this is why Rachel married Mose when she learned of her pregnancy. Played with because Mose has no idea the baby isn’t his.
- Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Vince is revealed to be a rapist, and even in the present doesn’t have much regret. Oddly enough, he still seems fond of Anna.
- Stepford Smiler: Jakob is a big one. He pretends to be happy in the English world...but is really a broken mess who wants to go home.
- Tears of Remorse: Jakob sheds these when he confesses to killing Anna.
- Teen Pregnancy: Rachel gives birth to a son at 16.
- Villain Respect: Despite being a scumbag, Vince actually praises Anna and says she wasn't afraid of anything.
- You Can't Go Home Again: Jakob wanted to return to his family and the community, but was banned because of his drug addiction. In the end, any chances he had of returning are permanently sealed off since he murdered Anna.
