Recap / Cloak & Dagger (2018) S 01 E 04 "Call/Response"

Go To

Tandy and Tyrone come face-to-face as the two are able to sit down and talk. Having not been able to tell anyone else what they have been experiencing, both take the opportunity to finally confide in the one person who may truly understand what they are going through. Meanwhile, Otis reveals a secret side of himself and Greg seems to be onto something with Melissa's case against Roxxon.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Despite being made of some kind of energy, Tandy's dagger is strong enough and sharp enough to cut through the heavy steel of a wall safe like it's made of cardboard.
  • Anachronic Order: The episode breaks between the meeting between Tandy and Tyrone and their actions the next day.
  • Awkward Father-Son Bonding Activity: Briefly played straight, then subverted, then averted. Ty's dad takes him on a trip to get him off a bad path (mistaking the bolt cutters in his bag for thieving tools, rather than the, let's be honest, far more unlikely plan he really had). Ty's unhappy at first. When they arrive in the Ninth Ward (a poverty stricken area very different from his wealthy home), he's first mystified then scared when his father does a chant to introduce himself to the residents and one of those residents responds by threatening to cut his father's throat, only to warmly welcome him home. It turns into a genuine bonding moment when Ty learns his father is a member of an Indian Tribe and used to participate in traditional Mardi Gras marches and had been working on a costume with Ty's older brother when the latter was murdered, which Ty asks to finish in his brother's memory. By the end of the episode, Ty and his father are on warm and happy terms.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The episode ends with Tyrone and Tandy telling each other off and Greg dead. However, Tyrone has bonded with his Dad, and Tandy has learned to control her powers. She also returns to Greg's office and finds his safe with documents that survived the fire.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Greg is killed by a hitwoman clearly sent by Roxxon.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Greg is murdered by a hitwoman who was posing as a water jug deliveryman. Turns out the jug is full of gasoline, which she then uses to burn his files on Roxxon.
  • Failed a Spot Check: The Roxxon hitwoman didn't bother to check for any safe in which Greg might have hidden any material for protection.
  • He Knows Too Much: Clearly the reason Greg is murdered and his office torched.
  • Mid-Suicide Regret: After tying chains around her ankles, tying her wrists together, and jumping off a pier, Tandy opens up her powers and cuts herself loose with her light blade.
  • Mythology Gag: The cloak that Tyrone finds in the Wild Red Hawks deposit of discarded suits is nearly identical to his cloak in the comics.
  • Nice Guy: Tandy reads Greg's hopes and finds out he's genuine in his feelings towards her mom.
  • Rage Breaking Point: When Tandy contrasts Ty's comfortable life with her difficult one, he retaliates by pointing out that as a white girl (in the South, no less) she's got it easier than he ever could in ways she doesn't even realize.
  • Sacrificial Lion: The episode goes to a lot of effort to show that Greg is a much better man than the impression we first got, that he really is a good lawyer fighting for Melissa and Tandy and that he genuinely loves Melissa and hopes for a good future with her and Tandy. Then Boom, Headshot!, he gets assassinated by Roxxon.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Last episode, we met Greg when he was wearing Melissa's bathrobe after an all night sex and drug bender. This episode he shows up well groomed and wearing his own business attire. He also has a very presentable office.
  • Shown Their Work: New Orleans has Native American tribes, like the Wild Red Hawks in this episode, who have intermingled with black folk. They march during Mardi Gras and have elaborate song and dance routines. The Spy Boy is at the front of the march, looking for rival tribes and the Big Chief is at the back of the march, leading and in charge, communicating with the Spy Boy using a line of people, including the Flag Boy in the middle of the march.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Ty tears into Tandy after learning she's contemplated suicide, including telling her to check her pretty white girl privilege. She responds by calling him out for having a wealthy family with two living parents who love him and letting him know that she knows he has a death wish, too, that her vision saw him committing Suicide by Cop.
