Recap / Brooklyn Nine Nine S 1 E 12 Pontiac Bandit

Go To

Pontiac Bandit is the twelfth episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's first season.

Rosa arrests an identity thief by the name of Doug Judy. Doug promptly asks to speak with Jake, saying that he'll give information about the Pontiac Bandit (a car thief Jake's been after) in exchange for a deal. Judy then leads Jake and Rosa on a convoluted chase around Brooklyn, ostensibly in pursuit of the elusive Pontiac Bandit.

Charles comes back to work after being shot in the ass. He's still in a butt cast, though, and is reliant on an electric scooter for mobility, leading to some mishaps around the squadroom. His neediness becomes too much for his colleagues and they go into the records room to try and avoid him.

Also, Captain Holt is trying to give away two puppies. Amy offers to take them in an attempt to suck up but it quickly becomes apparent that she's severely allergic.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Doug Judy becomes infatuated with Rosa after she arrests him. She doesn't think too much about him, though.
  • Actually, I Am Him: Doug Judy was the Pontiac Bandit all along!
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Holt finally ends up giving the puppies to Charles to keep him company during his convalescence, it initially seems like Amy has burst into tears due to the emotion. She's actually on the verge of suffering an anaphylactic shock due to her dog allergy.
  • Batman Gambit: Doug Judy gambled on the belief that Jake would be so eager to arrest the Pontiac Bandit that he'd believe anything he was told about the thief.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food:
Terry: Hey Boyle, you wanna choose where we order lunch from today?
Boyle: Really? You’re lifting the lifetime ban? I thought my lunch choices were quote-unquote “horrifying adventures in diarrhea”.
Amy: Today, Charles, we take that adventure with you.
  • Blatant Lies: Amy's eagerness to try and please Holt leads her to try and deny that she's allergic to dogs. It doesn't work.
Holt: You're allergic to dogs, aren't you?
Amy: No. I just need an EpiPen because my happiness is [her voice gets more choked] making my throat close up!
Holt: Hand me the small dog, Santiago.

  • Continuity Nod: Jake recognizes the night janitor, Ronald, from 48 Hours.

  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!:
Rosa: [Doug Judy]'s gone. He ran.
Jake: Why would he do that? He helped us catch the Pontiac Bandit, that was the deal. It doesn't make any sense unless - Doug Judy is the Pontiac Bandit.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: Holt yells at the detectives and Gina for being so heartless as to abandon Charles, who'd jumped in front of a serial killer with a gun with no thought of his own safety. Gina starts giggling because Captain Holt angrily yelling while holding two adorable puppies makes for a funny visual.
  • Noodle Incident: Doug develops a crush on Rosa after being interrogated by her. Jake's reaction implies that he's not the first.
Jake: What do you do to these perps?
  • Precious Puppy: Holt has two (mutts resulting from an unintended coupling between Holt's husband's dog and a neighbor dog) he needs to find good homes for. He eventually gives them to Charles so that he'll have company while at home recovering.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Holt finds most of the Nine-Nine hiding in the records room to avoid Boyle, he angrily tears them a new one, saying Boyle took a bullet for the precinct and calling them out for turning their backs on him when he needed them more than ever. The two puppies he holds during the lecture heavily soften the intended impact, though.
