She's having a blue day

Original air date: 11/19/2019

On a not so sunny day, we visit Blue's Clues house once again, this time, Josh really needs our help. He feels unable to identify how Blue is feeling, even though he knows that his dog is not behaving normally. With the help of the viewer, however, he identifies that she is sad, and begins to try to find out why she feels that way. And with a sad rhythm she announces that we are going to play Blue's clues to figure out what happened to make Blue so sad. Today's motivation is not because they love Blue's Clues, but because Josh believes it would help Blue to feel better.

Upon realizing that Blue's sadness was understood by Pawprint, Josh comforts her, saying that it could come back tomorrow. Trying to avoid anyone else being sad, Josh is as polite as possible while taking out his notebook (which Joe learned to do during his era), and let's look for clues, because the poor puppy needs help to feel better. As Josh talks to the viewer, the kids notice a clue right behind him, which Josh mistakes for them saying something happened at school (he's technically right), soon Josh realizes that we found the first clue, which was a tower of blocks.

Soon Josh hears a scream, it was Fred Felt, who was scared by a seemingly monster screaming at him (which was his sister Felicia with a scary mask), It turns out that Felicia wasn't realizing that she was genuinely scaring her brother and didn't want to hurt him and that's why she apologizes. After seeing this lovely scene, we heard that usual chorus, a little earlier than usual announcing Mailtime. Singing the Mailtime song apparently makes Blue feel a little better, because she starts to smile while she sings.

At the Thinking Chair, Josh and Blue announce that Mailbox and his letters make them happy, which Mailbox reciprocates by saying that it makes him feel proud to do a good job. The letter Josh and Blue received today was from a little boy saying that his puppy made him feel better when he was sad, which Josh claims also happens to him, when he sees that his puppy was still sad, he came to the conclusion that he needed to return the favor. As he walks down the purple-background hallway, he hears the viewer announcing that they found the second clue, which much to Josh's surprise was Blue's best friend, Magenta, which he draws with his magenta chalk.

After writing down the second clue, Josh heard some sad barks and ran until he found Blue standing in front of a photo album from her school. When Blue skidoos to school, we watch our old friend, Orange Kitten, cheerful and upbeat as she paints with watercolor paint, that is until Magenta accidentally knocks over a glass of water on her painting, With Josh's help, however, she chooses to do a new painting instead of staying still and sad. Soon, Josh and Blue move away to observe other things and stop to listen to Purple Kangaroo reading a book about a sad duckling, that is until Magenta rudely "steals" the book from his hand, leaving him sad and angry, but instead of taking the book from her, he decides to explain to Magenta that she was rude to him, saying that they could just read the book together, which she accepts. As Josh walks through the room, the viewer notices a track on the floor, which Josh mistakes for them crying and rushes to comfort them, much to their annoyance. After they shout that they saw a clue, Josh looks to the side and finds another pile of blocks, but they have fallen down, the last clue was a fallen down tower of blocks.

With no time to think, we found the three clues, meaning we were ready for the Thinking Chair. In the Thinking Chair, We try to find out what makes Blue feel sad with a A Tower of Blocks, Magenta and a Fallen down tower of Blocks with no options for wrong answers, Josh comes to the conclusion that Magenta knocked down the Blue's tower of blocks.

Now that we've discovered what made Blue sad, Josh wants to find a way to solve her problem. When the doorbell rings, Magenta walks through the door, and Josh tries to find a way to help them reconcile, soon realizing it might be difficult when he realizes they were going to play with blocks. Magenta encourages Blue to build a tower of blocks, only for her to knock it over while running. The second time she does this, Blue finally musters the strength to tell Magenta to stop, which Magenta understands but is sad about. So they can both have fun, Blue gives half of her blocks to Magenta. We got a happy ending. Now it's time for so long, but you don't need to be sad, because we're going to sing one more song, while Josh, Blue and Magenta sing, the camera moves away, and the door closes, once again we say goodbye to our friends.

  • Adapted Out: Neither Green Puppy nor Blue's other classmates who were recolors of Orange Kitten and Purple Kangaroo are present in this episode, with Blue's only classmates seen being Magenta, Purple Kangaroo, and Orange Kitten.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Very Downplayed with Magenta taking Green Puppy's spot being the one who made her classmates sad. Like Green, she had no bad intentions, she just didn't understood that she was making others feel bad.
  • Animal Gender-Bender: Purple Kangaroo, who avoided this trope in the original series, here has a seemingly natural pouch that only female Kangaroos have.
  • Call-Back: Josh here asks for the notebook very politely, because as Joe learned "I Did That!" and Steve learned on "Blue's Sad Day, asking for the notebook in a rough way made Sidetable sad.
  • Cheerful Child: Blue's classmates are as cheerful as ever, even during adverse times.
  • Fleeting Demographic Rule: This episode is basically an updated version of "Blue's Sad Day".
  • Innocently Insensitive: Magenta who accidentally makes her classmates sad with her clumsiness, she improves by the end of the episode.
    • Like Magenta, Felicia does not realize that she is genuinely scaring her brother and immediately apologizes for doing so.
  • Internal Homage: This episode is a homage to the episode "Blue's Sad Day" from the original series. Featuring a thank you in the credits for those who worked on the original version.
  • Lack of Empathy: Subverted. Neither Magenta, Josh or Felicia are able to understand that others are sad or feeling bad without being told, but they are not malicious, and try their best to help them.
    • This episode perhaps has a more realistic take on the trope, since in real life, difficulty understanding what others feel is a sign of a lack of cognitive empathy, which doesn't stop people from being kind and caring for others.
  • No Social Skills: Josh has difficulty understanding the emotions of others, needing the viewer's help to understand that his friends are feeling negative emotions. He improves as the episode goes on, but later episodes still show that he has some difficulty reading the room.
  • Special Thanks: In the episode credits there is a special thank you to those who worked on the episode "Blue's Sad Day" from the original series.
  • That Makes Me Feel Angry: During the episode, several characters openly announce how they are feeling, especially because Josh finds it difficult to say how others normally feel.
