Recap / As Told By Ginger S 1 E 02 Carl And Maude

Go To

  • Bait-and-Switch: Maude teases Lois by asking if she's interested in grandchildren...before showing pictures of her own.
  • Brick Joke: When Courtney shows Miranda pictures of Ginger's room, she cackles that she knew about the ponies (see below).
  • Continuity Nod: Ginger and her friends are assigned community service at a retirement home following their attempted theft of a sign in the previous episode.
  • Embarrassing Old Photo: There is a framed photo of a young Ginger sitting on the toilet that Macie hides under the sofa to keep Courtney from seeing it. Unfortunately, Maude finds it and fusses over it in front of Courtney.
  • Friend Versus Lover: A G-rated version. Carl's crush on Maude causes lots of friction between him and Hoodsey.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Carl forms one with Maude, though she dies during dinner.
  • Ironic Echo Cut: Ginger telling her friends about Maude's death ends with her saying "it was horrible". Cut to Courtney telling Miranda "it was spectacular!"
  • Killed Off for Real: Maude dies at the end of the episode, although she does come back as a ghost for "I Spy a Witch".
  • Never Say "Die": Maude drops dead onscreen at the Foutley's dinner table (Courtney is also present) and no derivative of "die" is ever used in the scenes that follow.
    Ginger: Mom...is Grandma...napping?
    Lois: I don't think so, Ging...Somehow, I really don't think so.
    Courtney: Poor dear!
  • Precocious Crush: Carl develops a crush on Maude, even considering their friendship to be a May–December Romance. He was about to propose to her with a worm shaped into a ring, but she died suddenly at the dinner table. He keeps her gallstone as a memento of her.
  • Relatively Flimsy Excuse: Courtney mistakes Maude for the Foutleys' grandmother. Ginger is about to correct her, but is interrupted before she can, and later goes along with it to spare herself as much humiliation as possible.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: Maude was engaged in a lot of pranks and wasn't shy about speaking her mind and doing what she wanted, decorum be damned. Even the other seniors weren't safe from her.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Miranda guesses correctly that Ginger has several ponies on display in the room. Later when preparing the house for Courtney's visit, Ginger wonders if she should hide her ponies.
