Basic Trope: A character who is often heard, but never seen.
- Straight: In the Alice and Bob show, we never see Alice's father, Mike, but we hear his voice on the other side of the phone.
- Exaggerated: We never see any characters, we just hear them.
- Downplayed: We catch a glimpse of Mike at one point, but mostly we just hear his voice.
- Justified: Mike is always too busy to show up, but he phones Alice a lot.
- Inverted: Alice's father is The Voiceless.
- Subverted: It seems like another episode in which we will only hear Mike, but then we see him for the first time.
- Double Subverted: But that was in a flashback or All Just a Dream.
- Parodied: Alice is often Leaning on the Fourth Wall about only hearing her father, not seeing him.
- Zig-Zagged: Whenever it looks like we will see Mike we never see him, but we do hear him.
- Averted:
- All characters are seen.
- All unseen characters are also unheard.
- Enforced:
- The writers want to make sure everybody knows Alice's unseen father is not dead.
- Mike is voiced by archival footage from a famous actor.
- Lampshaded: "I have never seen your dad, Alice, but I heard him yesterday."
- Invoked: Alice's father is on the run but is the kind of person who likes to keep in touch.
- Exploited: Nobody but Alice knows what the father looks like, so he is a spy and does a different voice each time.
- Defied: Alice brings her father on every adventure.
- Discussed: Bob asks Alice why she's never introduced him to Mike properly.
- Conversed: "What does Alice's father look like? We only know what he sounds like."
- Deconstructed: People question their sanity for hearing Mike all the time but never seeing him.
- Reconstructed: Mike's actions affect their lives in a material way, which assures them that he's real.
- Played for Laughs: Alice's father is The Unintelligible as well as The Voice.
- Played for Drama: Alice keeps trying to introduce Bob to Mike, but life keeps getting in their way and a running plot element is the angst of these three that they can't all see each other.
- Played for Horror: Alice's father is the Big Bad and he is The Voice because Nothing Is Scarier.
