Basic Trope: A character who never speaks on screen, despite apparently being capable of it.

  • Straight: Alice only communicates with her friends with notes or expressive gestures.
  • Exaggerated: Alice never speaks. Not to her friends, to her family... Nobody.
  • Downplayed:
    • Characters are depicted talking on the phone to Alice, but during her rare on-screen appearances she's never shown talking.
    • Alice only makes quiet grunts and hums but never be Suddenly Voiced.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Alice is a Motor Mouth.
  • Subverted: Alice seems to be voiceless, but starts speaking normally halfway through the show.
  • Double Subverted: ...but that was the local ventriloquist, Bailey, throwing her voice.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged: Alice mostly never speaks, then sometimes does.
  • Averted: Alice always communicates through talking.
  • Enforced:
    • Alice's actress has laryngitis when they're about to shoot, so the scenes are rewritten so that an already dialogue-light part has no dialogue in it.
    • Advertisement:
    • Alice is cast by an actress who can't speak in English, and the production team decides to make her voiceless in order to omit the need of dubbing.
    • Alice was originally a fine 17 year old anime character who would speak a lot, but the production team lacked the budget to hire a good voice actress, nor do they have time for preparing her script, so they decided to remove all of her dialogues and portray her as a stoic, voiceless character instead.
  • Lampshaded: "Alice really isn't talkative around us, is she?"
  • Invoked: Alice never speaks because if she spoke, her powers would kill everyone in a six mile radius.
  • Exploited: Bob needs backup on a stealth mission, so he brings Alice, who won't chatter and give him away.
  • Defied: "I'm going to talk, and everyone who might be watching is going to hear me!"

  • Discussed: "..." "Honestly Alice, that's your answer to eveything."
  • Conversed: "Is Alice mute?" "I...honestly don't know."
  • Deconstructed: Alice's speechlessness leads to a case of Poor Communication Kills.
  • Reconstructed: Alice stays silent most of the time, but speaks when it is really needed.
  • Played For Laughs: All the other characters refers to Alice as "that notorious chatterbox" whom they dread running into because it is almost impossible to stop her when she first starts talking. Coincidently; Alice never speaks when she is on-screen.
  • Played For Drama: Alice used to be a real chatterbox... Until some horrible incident. Bonus points if the incident was caused or enabled by something she said.
