Playing With / Promotional Powerless Piece of Garbage

Basic Trope: an unit in a game available only during special occasions, but that nobody actually uses because it's not godd.

  • Played Straight: the Ceremonial Sword can be obtained only after winning the monthly Tropers tournament, but its power is actually lower than the much easier-to-obtain Shortsword.
  • Exaggerated:
    • The Ceremonial Sword has a power of 0!
    • The Ceremonial Sword actually harms its wielder!
    • The Ceremonial Sword was obtainable only during the 1999 Summer-Halloween-Planetary-Alignment Tournament... and it's weaker than the starting Rusted Sword!
    • The Ceremonial Sword isn't even considered a weapon, making it literally unusable.
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified: the Ceremonial Sword wasn't meant as a real weapon.
  • Subverted:
    • The Ceremonial Sword's power seems bad... but its secondary effect is an absolute Game-Breaker.
    • The Ceremonial Sword is now available through more mundane means, like as part of a DLC.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Except after a patch that secondary effect got nerfed, leaving it in the dust.
    • To take its place, the Nonexistent Sword is now offered as a prize.
  • Inverted: the Piece Of Rock can be found in every level with soil in stacks of 511, respawns infinitely, and is the most powerful weapon in Tropers.
  • Parodied: the Bragging Rights Sword can be obtained only after winning the Tropers Tournament. After every hit, it makes the player character say "I WON! YOU'RE THE LOSER!".
  • Averted:
    • No items in Tropers are obtained through exclusive events.
    • The Ceremonial Sword is a very hard-to-obtain weapon, and is very powerful.
  • Enforced:
    • The creators of Tropers didn't want casual players to feel envious of players using the Ceremonial Swords, so they nerfed its power. Now casual players know they aren't missing much, while players who won the tournaments can engage in Conspicuous Consumption.
    • The creators knew that the player that needs an overpowered weapon the least is the one who just won a tournament, instead promoting Cherry Tapping.
  • Defied: the swordsmith commissioned to craft the Ceremonial Sword refused to make such a weak and rare weapon, and instead they forge the Infinity +1 Sword.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Implied: we don't actually know how strong or weak the Ceremonial Sword is, but since none of the characters that won the Tournament use it, it's doubtful that it's a very powerful weapon.
  • Invoked: after being commissioned with making a custom sword for a tournament winner, the swordsmith intentionally made the weak Ceremonial Sword.
  • Lampshaded: "As your prize, here's the Ceremonial Sword; it's an unmatched weapon in reminding people that you won this tournament and... nothing else".
  • Discussed: "Look at that jerk with the Ceremonial Sword!" "Yeah! He's so pompous just 'cause he won a tournament, but I bet that piece of pig-iron will snap if I actually fought him!"
  • Conversed: "Good news! I won the monthly Tropers tournament, and received... the Ceremonial Sword? Couldn't I get a weapon that actually did stuff?"
  • Deconstructed: since the prizes are so underwhelming, the tournaments in Tropers get less contestants over time.
  • Reconstructed: people join for testing their skills, to have fun, or just to watch; the prizes are just the cherry on top.
  • Played For Laughs: the Idiot Hero just won the Tournament in Tropers, and assumes the Ceremonial Sword is an incredibly powerful weapon. They try to use it on The Goomba, and immediately get folded like a lawn chair.
  • Played For Drama: ???
  • Played For Horror: ???

As a prize for winning, here's the Go-Back-Blade, with the special ability to bring you back to the main page!
