Playing With / Gold and White Are Divine

Go To

Basic Trope: Gold and white are associated with Big Good and with divinity.

  • Straight: The Hero Alice, Nice Guy Bob and Good Shepherd Father Daniel dress in white and gold. The Baroness Emma, Jerkass Frank and Tautological Templar Sir Gordon don't like these colors, dressing in darker shades instead.
  • Exaggerated: The good guys surround themselves with everything painted white and gold, plus each of them has Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold. The villains hate the very sight of the colors.
  • Downplayed:
    • Some of the heroes like white, some like gold, and some like neither.
    • Angels appear as youths clad in white and gold, but among the human characters, nobody specifically fancies these colors.
    • The heroes have some occasional white or gold highlights in their clothing, but it's not usually the main colour.
  • Justified:
    • The heroes wear the colors traditionally associated with light.
    • Alice's battle armor is pure white and reflects light in battle, distracting her opponents.
  • Inverted: The heroes wear black and the villains wear white and gold.
  • Subverted:
    • Alice and Bob play The Mole on the heroic team and dress in white and gold only to fool everyone else.
    • The story begins on Sunday and Father Daniel is shown clad in gold. It's later revealed he's Eastern Orthodox and therefore traditionally wears gold on Sunday services, while other than that, he doesn't particularly prefer the color.
    • The Baroness Emma has a unique sort of color blindness. She wears white and gold and honestly believes she's wearing green and black.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Until they both turn out to be The Mole.
    • He does, though, really like white.
    • The good guys help to cure her eyes and she does a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Parodied: The villain cannot wear anything that's gold or white, otherwise they make an instant Heel–Face Turn and become an all-loving, ideal hero who rescues puppies. Conversely, if a hero wears all black clothing, they instantly become an omnicidal maniac.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: ???
  • Enforced: It's done deliberately to enhance Black-and-White Morality and for the audience to see who's evil (complete with Evil Wears Black).
  • Lampshaded: "White and gold are the colors for guys like you."
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: The Hero Alice dresses in purple and green, because she thinks these colors suit her better and she doesn't want to blindly follow stereotypes.
  • Discussed:
    • "Our queen's pretty quick-thinking for her age. She always appears in white, her golden curls loose on her shoulders, and everyone's ready to believe she is The Ingenue with the kindest soul ever."
  • Conversed:
    • "I hate it when the shining armor of a knight is always white. I mean, it's impractical! If the directors had been the slightest bit realistic, it would have been brown with mud and dust by now!"
