Go To

The Rita (sometimes stylized as THE RITA) is a musical project started by Canadian artist Sam McKinlay. Started in Vancouver in the 1990s, The Rita is largely credited for creating the "Harsh Noise Wall" subgenre, and coining the term. Majority of The Rita's music isn't on streaming services besides Youtube and Bandcamp.

Tropes

  • Hell Is That Noise: Goes without saying.
  • Loudness War:
  • Fan Disservice: The Medora cover shows a Panty Shot of a ballet dancer centerstage, surrounded by crazed gawking men holding mutilated shark carcasses.
  • Motifs: Ballet, shark attacks, and old actresses.
  • One-Woman Song: "Mary Kerridge," "Kathryn," "Crystal Smith," "Gamzatti."
  • Sensory Abuse: Veers into this often.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Gamzatti is named after the character from the ballet La Bayadere. The title comes from the fact that the noise was sourced from the sounds of ballet pointe-shoes.
    • Creature from the Black Lagoon is on the Double Creature Feature cover.
    • The Nylons of Laura Antonelli is a reference to the Italian actress.
  • True Art Is Incomprehensible: Seen as this by most people. Even among enjoyers of experimental music, there are many so absolutely despise Harsh Noise Wall and The Rita's contributions to the subgenre.
