The Octonauts is a series of children's book which the popular CBeebies series is based on.

Written by Vicki Wong and Michael C. Murphy, it currently has six books published:

  • The Octonauts & the Only Lonely Monster
  • The Octonauts & the Sea of Shade
  • The Octonauts & the Frown Fish
  • The Octonauts & the Great Ghost Reef
  • The Octonauts Explore the Great Big Ocean
  • The Octonauts & the Growing Goldfish

The book series contain examples of the following tropes:

  • Anti-Villain: The Shade King, the main culprit for the events of the second book, isn't really a villain, he is not even evil, he just wants to protect his people from the real-world inhabitants, who, in his eyes, are disrespectful of their shadows.
  • Furry Reminder: Kwazii can be seen sleeping in a cat bed and playing with a yarn ball in the second and fourth book
  • Informed Attribute: The conclusion to The Octonauts & the Only Lonely Monster has the Octonauts all reveal unique attributes that make each of them one-of-a-kind (except Vegemals, who are all the same). That said, almost none of these traits are ever referenced before or since.
  • Jerk Ass Has A Point: He may be hostile to the main characters at the beginning, but The Shade King makes a good point in saying that the outside world is careless about their shadows, taking them for granted and ignoring them.
  • Knight Templar: The Shade King is prejudiced against physical beings, due to his perceived negligence from the latter's side, and wants to take the shadows back to The Sea of Shade, not seeing that both his subjects and the counterparts are suffering because of it.
  • Living Shadow: Shade people, being literally the animated shadows of the living (and not) beings, and their king.
  • Mouthy Bird: In The Octonauts & the Only Lonely Monster has Peso referring to himself as the only penguin with shiny white teeth, which... well, since he has a beak, is pretty unique.
  • Non-Malicious Monster: The giant squid from the first book, "The Octonauts And The Only Lonely Monster", as the title says, is not mean in any way, he just wants to have somebody to love.
