The Series as a Whole

  • The Trickster provides running commentary throughout the books on Jacob's actions, hypocricies, and attempts to be a hero. Given he's the ghost of the God of Evil, it is interesting to see his perspective on most things.
  • Jacob, due to being The Stoic, is very often The Comically Serious and is a Snark Knight as well. He constantly throws back jabs both subtle and less than subtle when dealing with the Trickster and people he believes are giving themselves airs.

Wraith Knight

  • The first meeting with Regina and Jacob is full of these.
    • Regina assumes he's a monster because Dark Is Evil in her experience:
The woman blinked, looking up. Recognition of what I’d done passed across her face. “You healed me?”
      “Yes.”
      “Why?”
      “Why not?”
“Because you’re a Wraith Knight and likely eat infants for supper?”
"I sincerely hope that is not the case."
    • Jacob confronts her and she threatens him with Hopebringer, a broken magical sword.
“How generous of you. Your sword is broken.”
“It’s supposed to be broken,” Regina said, frowning.
“This must be a new form of combat I’m unfamiliar with.”
Regina raised an eyebrow. “For a Dark Lord, you’re unusually snotty.”
    • Regina's reaction when Jacob wants her to ride an undead dragon.
“Fine. Will it obey my commands?”
      “I assume so,” I said.
      “You assume so,” Regina said.
“Would you prefer I lied?” I offered.
  • Jacob is nonplussed by the fact he is remembered as "Jacob the Bastard", a roguish hero who was a drunkard and The Casanova. As we learn, Jacob was a Puritan and extremely conservative with Single-Target Sexuality. This is far from the only example of Future Imperfect and Written by the Winners.
  • Jacob and the Trickster constantly snark at one another.
Do you intend to annoy me for all eternity? I asked. If so, I may reconsider falling on my sword.
Only if you amuse me. The Trickster’s tone was less mocking and more direct.
I shall endeavor to be as boring as possible then.
Ha! The Trickster laughed. Now that’s the Riverson wit I so adore!
  • Serah is also very-very snarky during her conversations with Jacob.
"If this is a victory, I'd hate to see what you call a defeat."
    • Her brother isn't much better:
“Heal me, Oh Dark One, with your dark witchiness!” Thomas said, waving his hand.
  • Regina's less than stellar defense of her actions:
“I am not a fanatic,” Regina said, softly. She looked deeply uncomfortable with the rage being directed at her. “I have my reasons.”
Thomas looked back at Regina, a sympathetic look on his face. “I heard about Whitehold. I’m sorry. But you’ve always been passionate about everything you do. You almost broke my arm playing stickball.”
“You were playing wrong,” Regina defended.
  • Regina explaining how many people she's willing to kill to get revenge on the Nine Heroes.
“They are followed by armies, nobles, priests, wizards, and peasants. They have disgraced the entirety of the world with their actions and anyone who follows them deserves to…” Regina trailed off. “I’m sounding like a crazy person, aren’t I?”

Wraith Lord

  • Serah and Jacob sniping over married life:
“Jacob, where did you get your view of marriage? It is quite unlike anything a sane and sensible person would have.”
  • The Trickster continues to make jabs:
The Trickster: Does anyone truly know anyone else, or do we just deal with the masks people wear?
Jacob: That was a surprisingly insightful statement.
The Trickster: I’m always insightful. It’s because I expect the worst from everyone.
    • And:
Silence. I do not have time for your lunacy.
    There’s always time for lunacy!
  • At one point, Jacob takes to periodically scrying on Regina and Serah to make sure they're okay. This leads to some embarrassment for him, but apparently not for them.
Regina: I've felt your presence checking up on Serah and I.
Jacob: (uncomfortable) Yes, that one time...

Wraith King

  • Jacob, Rose, and Morwen engage in constant Snark-to-Snark Combat once their group assembles.
  • Morwen proves to be an incredibly rude, foul-mouthed, and rude Deadpan Snarker that repeatedly shocks Jacob as well as Rose.
"You know, you're a lot crasser than your public persona suggets," Rose said.
  • Morwen's reactions to hearing Jacob's motivations.
Morwen stared at me like I was lunatic. "Oh my gods, you did this all for love?"
