Foreshadowing / World of Assassination Trilogy

Go To

The World of Assassination Trilogy is meant to be a large interconnected world of levels, all of which have specific hints planted within them that foreshadow future levels, events, and even targets. Very similar to how the Marvel Cinematic Universe handles references and allusions to characters that appear in later filmsnote , the writers don't actually plan too far ahead on every plot point, but they do insert snippets of ideas that can be used in the future to effectively work as this:

Spoilers for events in Hitman (2016), Agent 47: Birth of the Hitman, and Hitman 2 are unmarked here, You have been warned!. Spoilers from Hitman 3 are marked however.

    Hitman (2016)

Freeform Training:

  • Some of the party guests are aliased as future characters you either hear about or encounter later in the series; they also talk about future events that also come to pass:
    • A man aliased as Thomas Cross is talking about his fledgling newspaper business and wanting to expand into a global media empire. His friend, Terrance, tells him that he has "connections" who can help make it happen. Thomas Cross is the father of Jordan Cross, the primary target of "Club 27", while Terrance is likely associated with Providence, given his language about looking for people he knows looking for "Men of Ambition".
    • A woman aliased as Isabella Caruso is talking about her three kids and her particular disdain for Silvio, claiming his genius makes her skin crawl. This is a reference to Silvio Caruso, the primary target of the "World of Tomorrow" mission in Sapienza. She also alludes to his brothers; Renzo and Orlando Caruso, who would later flee Italy because of her controlling nature.
    • A group of guests state that Ritter previously stole art belonging to the Stuyvesant family. Marcus Stuyvesant, a member of that family, is revealed to be one of the Providence Partners near the end of Hitman 2.

The Final Test:

  • The level is set in 1979, with Jasper Knight's escape being plotted by legendary KGB spymaster Janus. He would later partially appear within the shadows when talking to Ort-Meyer in Agent 47: Birth of the Hitman, but also becomes a target in Hitman 2 roughly forty years later in-story due to being the first Constant for Providence, and as a part of 47 and Grey's Deceased Fall-Guy Gambit. A few of the soldiers also wonder if the escape is a sign of Janus' true allegiance, referencing that Janus would later defect from the USSR.

Paris:

  • Dalia will ask her assistant Hailey to retrieve a recording of a plan to overthrow the Moroccan government, top secret plans for a bioweapon by the Ether Corporation, and an illegal liver transplant at a Japanese clinic.
  • Jordan Cross is mentioned by Tren Po, who would ask him to make a music track for Sun Po, the dictator for Khandanyang.
  • If Helmut Kruger goes to the meeting with Dalia, he'll mention that Hannah Highmoore fell off a roof; this is Jordan Cross's ex-girlfriend who’s revealed to have been killed by Jordan while at a party in the briefing for "Club 27".
  • Andrea Martinez, an associate of the Delgado Cartel, has a meeting with Dalia on the patio, and they talk about the state of Hector and Rico Delgado and the information IAGO can provide the cartel. Andrea would later become a target in Hitman 2's "Three Headed Serpent" mission as the ICA deconstructs Grey's militia.
  • One of the auction guests will receive a call about Crystal Dawn, the terrorist group they represent, having their posters put up in Morocco despite having no active cell there. This turns out to be part of General Reza Zaydan's plan in Marrakesh. In addition, he also mentions Richard Ekwenski, who would later become an Elusive Target in Bangkok.
  • Sir Humphrey Titus Rutherford suggests hiring a fixer called Noel Crest in a phone call. Crest would later become the main target of the Hitman 3 bonus mission "Shadows in the Water".

Sapienza:

  • Diana mentions that Silvio Caruso was a former client for the ICA before becoming a target, but she doesn't elaborate. The "Landslide" mission is that contract, where you kill Marco Abiatti, a corrupt politician Caruso wants dead in order to save Sapienza from his clutches.
  • Dr. Lafayette mentions "curing" Jordan Cross of his crippling Daddy Issues. Not only is this a Blatant Lie as the player later finds out, but Cross becomes a target two missions later.
  • Silvio Caruso, Dr. Lafayette, and Francesca De Santis all reference various aspects of Marco Abiatti, the target of "Landslide", and former bully of Caruso when he was younger. Caruso claims he chucked him down a well if aggravated, Francesca (if certain events happen) will note that Caruso put a hit out on Abiatti, and Dr. Lafayette will mention that Sapienza was where Marco Abiatti died when musing at the Gelato cafe.
  • A pair scientists in the underground lab will talk about using the ETHER virus on various people, including The Maelstrom, who would later be revealed to a deep sea pirate related to Maya Parvati in Colorado, and would later become a target in Hitman 2.

Marrakesh:

  • Ellinor Westrup, a former IAGO spy, can be seen outside the Shisha Den, and talks to someone called Audrey over the phone about leaving IAGO, and mentions to her that she was going to tell Dalia about the orchestrated breakout of Strandberg, and that it's some kind of conspiracy to put the country in a military coup by outside forces. This alludes to the plot of Providence pulling the strings to put Marrakesh into a Military coup and enforce martial law, while using General Reza Zaydan (the secondary target for the mission) as the figurehead, which doesn't happen due to Strandberg messing around with their plans.
  • The briefing for "The Gunrunner"'s Vito Đurić Eluisve Target mentions that the client for the hit is Kronstadt Industries. This is relevant as in Hitman 2, they turn out to be themselves secretly involved in selling arms to ruthless dictators. It seems likely they're just getting rid of competition, considering he's noted to have gained access to and sold one of their combat remotes in 2015, presumably illicitly.

Bangkok:

  • A conversation between an NPC and secondary target Ken Morgan will talk about a case he won for Haven Corporate Services. This alludes to HAVEN Island, an island resort that runs a service that takes in clients and essentially starts their life anew by deleting their past. 47 and company would later visit the island to take out their heads at the end of Hitman 2.
  • There’s a machete that can be found in this mission called "Nne Obara's Machete", making it one of the few Elusive Target possessions that can be used in the main game, as well as being foreshadowing towards "The Warlord"'s Nne Obara as an Elusive Target.

Colorado:

  • Penelope Graves may mention "Blue Seed Agriculture", which appears to be a subsidiary of Blue Seed Pharmaceuticals. This was the company that contracted Providence and The Institute for Human Betterment to send 47 and 6 to kill the Burnwood family as they were going to sue them for poisoning the local water supply. Blue Seed is later advertised in Hitman 2 in Miami on billboards, on a racing car, and even on the results screen for the event (despite not racing).
  • If Graves and Berg talk to one another, Berg will call Sean Rose a monster, and Graves doesn’t believe "The Boss" (The Shadow Client) is a monster either. Grey mentions after the events of Hitman 2's "Chasing a Ghost" mission in Mumbai that "sometimes even monsters serve a purpose", alluding to this conversation.
  • The Maelstrom is mentioned by two separate guard groups if you walk around the compound. The Maelstrom would later become a target in Hitman 2's "Chasing a Ghost" mission in Mumbai, as he's revealed to be one of The Shadow Clients' top Lieutenants.
  • A siege on a Super Tanker is mentioned, as well as the war on a Hamsun Oil Rig by guard groups when talking about Maya Parvati. Both incidents are recalled to the player in the briefing of Mumbai's "Chasing a Ghost" mission in Hitman 2.
  • Olivia is mentioned here as part of The Shadow Client's cyber-division. While Olivia is mentioned and shown in Colorado's briefing, she becomes much more important to the story later on, becoming crucial in pulling off the HAVEN island heist and serves as your handler in Chongqing.
  • The final cutscene for the level has The Shadow Client directly reference events later clarified in the Birth of the Hitman comic (which was made after this game released) and Hitman 2 would later recall this incident when 47 has to remember who Janus is. Both reference the village incident, where 47 and 6 kill the wardens looking for them, and get punished accordingly.
  • "The Chameleon"'s Richard Foreman was mentioned by various guards while roaming around the compound, several months before his eventual release as an Elusive Target.

Hokkaido:

  • The Kronstadt Industries name can be heard in Hokkaido (as the makers of KAI AI bot), with the logo being found on the side of lots of the equipment used in that location.
  • The briefing for "Situs Inversus" mentions Haven corporate services as a means for Providence to get to ICA contacts around the world. As with the allusion in Bangkok, this later turns out to be HAVEN Island.
  • Pavel Frydel's name is first mentioned by a patient near the bar in Situs Inversus. Frydel would later become one half of "The Surgeons" Elusive Target; Pavel Frydel and Akane Akenawa, later on.

    Hitman 2

Miami:

  • A news report can be heard about the warring Moreno Cartel and the Delgado Cartel (the very same cartel 47 encounters in Blood Money), and that the rivalry between the two has only escalated, with mutilated bodies being found in a compound. Delgado Cartel heads Rico Delgado would be the following missions' target.

Santa Fortuna:

  • A news report by Pam Kingsley details the discovery of a safehouse owned by The Maelstrom in Shanghai, who is now the chief suspect in the murder of construction company CEO Lin Xi. The Maelstrom would be one of the three targets in Mumbai.

Mumbai:

  • A local news report on cricket explains that The Mongooses cricket team has suddenly fallen ill with stomach flu before their big game against The Hippos. Despite this, they note the team is still feeling optimistic about winning. If you follow Dawood Rangan around, he will talk to one of his guards, and admit he was the one who bribed the referee to dope the Mongooses so that the Hippos would win. Said guard had placed a bet on the Mongooses winning.

Whittleton Creek:

  • Pam Kingsley, a news reporter, reports on an upcoming global energy summit that is being held in Kiruna, with the hopes of a climate treaty being made as a likely outcome. This foreshadows the following mission, where the Ark Society's "Original Five", are all energy CEO's faced with this exact problem.
  • The Censor, a serial killer patrolling Vermont and grading his victims based on how they fought back, is subject to a news broadcast by Pam. Almost a full year later, and "The Censor" is turned into an Elusive Target.

Isle of Sgàil:

  • You can meet Cornelia Stuyvesant in the hallways of one of the castles. She is the daughter of Marcus Stuyvesant; one of The Partners of Providence. This is made more significant when at the end of the mission, The Constant mentioned "The Stuyvesants" as one of the three families of Providence. Cornelia would later re-appear in Dubai to see her father once more.
  • Opening the safe in The Constant's room has his name revealed on a dossier hidden in there; Arthur Edwards. This is significant, as that name would be questioned by Olivia as to where all The Partners' money went at the end of Haven Island.

New York:

  • Jason Portman is mentioned by an NPC to Ruby Red, a reporter at the bank. He later appears in Haven Island as the guest of Ljudmila Vetrova, and is asked to sell his shares of Much Talk to Haven, something he's uncomfortable doing due to his dislike of one of the targets; Steven Bradley.

    Hitman 3
  • The cover for the game has 47 in a coat with a High Collar of Doom. which directly foreshadows 47 wearing Lucas Grey's jacket after he gets killed in Dartmoor.

Mendoza:

  • At the end of 47’s rendezvous with Diana at the beginning of the mission, they put their hand on his briefly, and there’s an ever-so-brief flash of red and grey before you gain control of 47 again. That flash of red and grey is a hint at the reveal at the end of the mission, which is that Diana’s touch was laced with neurotoxin; said flash is the same you get when taking damage.
