Lost Nations is a Hetalia: Axis Powers fanfiction written on Fanfiction Dot Net by Scorpius02, completed after 18 chapters.

This is the story of two brothers who apparently are unable to grow old or die, settling in a small town for a while before having to move on in order to protect their secrets.

But this time, they find themselves meeting a great deal of weird people and their secret is put in serious danger of being exposed.

Contains the following tropes

  • Berserk Button:
    • Matthew is rather possessive of his teddy bear Kumajiro and outright threatens Alfred when the plushy is "stolen" and potentially splattered with sauce.
    • Don't ever serve Yao Wang subpar food and claim this is genuine Chinese cooking, for he will publically and very loudly shame you and your household down to the pets.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Alfred already lost Matthew once, he doesn't care for it happening again. When Kristy's ex shoots the Canadian in the head, the American goes ballistic.
  • Big Eater: A whole restaurant outright gapes at the sheer amount of food Alfred is ingesting. Matthew is more discreet, but he's mentioned to consume a family-sized maple syrup bottle without any problems.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: The Asian Nations are around twenty, and cause a huge scene at the restaurant when they decide to eat together. Alfred outright calls them insane.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Matthew's coworker Kristy complains about her clingy ex in the first chapter. The dude ultimately becomes responsible for exposing the brothers as the "lost Nations" to the Europeans.
  • Cover-Blowing Superpower: Alfred tries to run away as quickly as possible with Matthew when his brother gets shot in the head, very aware that people aren't supposed to come back from that. Seeing the Canadian twin walking and breathing after the incident is the last piece of evidence Russia needs to confirm they are Nations.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Kristy's ex was obsessed with her always answering his texts on time, and when she dumped her because it made her ill at ease, he concluded Matthew was her new lover and started to harass him.
  • Don't Split Us Up: Alfred desperately tried to oppose Matthew's adoption by a Canadian couple only to fail. Centuries after the event, the American is still negatively impacted by the separation and Matthew also was deeply unhappy about it.
  • For Want Of A Nail: What if Canada and America escaped the notice of the colonial powers and were only found in the modern era?
  • Friend to All Children: As he was visiting his friends the Williams, Francis noticed their newly adopted son struggled with the change and gifted him a teddy bear for comfort. Centuries later, Matthew kept the plushy and is still deeply attached to it.
  • Happily Adopted: Downplayed with Matthew — the Williams couple genuinely loved him and he loved them in turn, but he couldn't forget the brother he left behind and ultimately ran away, leaving his adoptive parents heartbroken.
  • Identical Grandson: Francis and Arthur's logical conclusion when they meet the North American brothers in the modern era and are reminded of people they have interacted with in the colonial era is that the boys are descendants of these obviously long-dead colons.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Even if they weren't identified as Nations, Canada and America nonetheless interacted with England and France when they were still colonies.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Russia understands these North American brothers are hiding something big and starts discreetly investigating on their past. When Germany confronts him, Russia admits he had plans but now discarded them since the newly discovered Nations will feel quite grateful to him for introducing them to their true nature, and that deserve a little favour.
  • Momma's Boy: Part of the reason why America and Canada decided to hide from the colonial empires was because the "white men" were mistreating Native people like the woman they called their mother.
  • Spotting the Thread: Russia agreed to a strength contest with someone he believed to be a rude museum employee, only for Alfred to casually outpace him. Since a mundane human shouldn't be able to arm-wrestle a Nation, it triggers Russia's curiosity and leads him to investigate.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Kristy's ex doesn't want to accept she dumped him, making a scene in the café in which she works, harassing Matthew because he thinks she's dating the Canadian and escalating by outright attempting to kill Matthew.
  • They Would Cut You Up: The North American brothers deliberately steered away from the government and do their utmost to fly under the radar because they don't want to be locked in a lab for the secret of their enhanced lifespan and regenerative abilities. When cornered by France, England and Russia, Alfred outright screams he and his twin won't become guinea pigs.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Being a Nation means having to watch humans you are friendly with die again and again. Matthew sadly notes it's rather hard on Alfred since the American is extremely sociable, and even old colonial empires such as France and England are somber about this aspect of their immortality.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Unfortunately for Matthew, his workmate Kristy insists on believing his relationship with Alfred is more than platonic, but there's a hint she just loves teasing him.
