Fanfic / Dream Companions

Go To

Otherworldly dreams that intruded upon her reality. Awe-inspiring warriors that fought for a better tomorrow in a distant world that seemed even bleaker than hers. The chance to befriend them and gain their knowledge and skills to become something greater. And above all, the power to make her dreams come true.

What else could Missy ask for?

A Worm/Arknights crossover in the very literal sense of the word.

Author's Summary

In this quest, written by Yami Fenrir, Missy ends up summoning operators from Arknights, and slowly gaining their skills and knowledge, while she tries to be the hero Brockton Bay needs. Originally, this was intended to be a spinoff for Projection Quest, but then it became it's own story.

The quest can be found on Spacebattles, but it can also be read on Sufficient Velocity and Archive of Our Own.

This work contains examples of:

  • Adorably Precocious Child: Missy is practically the definition of this trope. Bratty half-pint that’s Wise Beyond Their Years and determined to prove herself as a new hero, she’s nevertheless not above the occasional childish antic with Nearl and impromptu snowball fights with children her own age. It doesn’t help that she also begins to adopt some of Nearl’s formal and verbose manner of speaking due to her powers. Neither does the fact that she’s latched onto Nearl as a Parental Substitute due to her problematic family situation.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Much to her annoyance, Missy is often on the receiving end of this by Nearl.
  • Cooldown Hug: During the funeral of Missy's mother, Purity's attempt at an apology ends up giving Missy a panic attack, necessitating Nearl to give her one of these.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Nearl, with the assistance of Glory Girl, makes short work of Hookwolf and Cricket during their first fight after joining New Wave.
  • Death by Adaptation: Instead of surviving until Gold Morning, Missy's parents end up becoming collateral damage in a fight between Purity and Oni Lee. Her mother ends up dying due to not using a seatbelt, while her Father ends up in a coma.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Missy delivers a particularly brutal one to Purity, when she tries to apologise during her mom's funeral.
  • Tears of Joy: During the Christmas celebration, Nearl's gift (a limited edition plushy of herself) to Missy ends up causing this to the latter.
Missy: I don't understand, Nearl. Why does feeling happy hurt so much…?
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Missy's rant towards Purity during her mom's funeral is certainly not something that a child should ever say.
Enraged and maddened beyond belief, the words came to her almost unbidden, spilling from her lips in a caustic, hateful torrent that no normal girl her age could ever hope to match. In that moment, she twisted years of inherited memories and experience in understanding and communicating with others into something Nearl had never used it for. Something ugly.
  • A True Hero: One of the things Nearl teaches Missy is to how to be a true knight. This culminates in Nearl asking her to define what it means to be a knight. Missy defines it as being a Hope Bringer, even in a Crapsack World like Earth Bet.
  • Twirl of Love: After her fight with Victor and Othala, Missy meets up with Nearl after her fight with Hookwolf and Cricket. Nearl gives her one of these, in front of everyone, ending up being rather embarraced about it.
