The Apex Academy for Gifted Students is a fairly new (but still legendary) selective high school for students with great talent. Since most students choose to cut themselves off from the outside world by at least a little bit to focus on their studies, it’s not particularly unusual for calls and messages to go without responses for a while…

Apex Academy description''

Apex Academy is a Danganronpa fan fiction or “Fangan”. The story follows Kakumi Kogamino, the Super High School Level Pool Player, and 15 other high school students as they find themselves trapped inside the Apex Academy for Gifted Students, a school designed to hone and develop the talents of exceptional individuals. There, a strange robot named Monochaperone, or Monochap, attempts to goad them into killing each other with various motives, leading to intense class trials to find the killer among them.

This does not take place within the Danganronpa universe Canon, nor does the original HPA exist here as a real or fictional place.

The story is hosted on Tumblr, and can be read here. Page one starts here.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Accident, Not Murder: What the first victim's death turns out to be: Mary Jane unknowingly broke Kazusuke's foot while they were roughhousing, leading him to suffer a pulmonary embolism and fatally hit his head on a table.
    • Likewise, Aki's death was caused by Otoya trying to protect himself from a sudden attack, with him simply grabbing her arm with too much force. He even intended to find a tourniquet to try and save her, before chickening out after seeing Kakumi and Mahavir in the infirmary.
  • Back from the Dead: Chapter 4's motive is this: if someone ends up committing a murder, a group vote will be determined to decide which dead classmate gets ressurected (excluding the victim and killer of the case that spurs it). The realism of the motive is contested throughout the chapter, but is proven to work after Aidan's brought back the next chapter.
  • Rube Goldberg Hates Your Guts: Chapter 2 has the "murder machine" that killed Kokoro.
  • Switching P.O.V.: Near the end of Chapter 5's trial, Kakumi is held hostage by Yuki, who threatens to slit her throat if someone else isn't voted for, leaving Mahavir to become the central POV character.
  • Televisually Transmitted Disease: Notably obscure medical conditions pop up surprisingly often in this fic. The first victim suffers a pulmonary embolism (a condition in which one or more arteries in the lungs become blocked by a blood clot or, in this case, bone fat) while the second motive involves oxygen poisoning.
