Apogee Entertainment is a reimagining of Apogee Software Productions, a Video Game development and publishing company that was established in 1987 by Scott Miller as Apogee Software Productions. Apogee was famous for publishing many early video games and popularized the episodic shareware distribution model for video games, wherein the game was split into multiple parts—typically three—and access to the first part was free, while the remaining parts were only accessible by purchasing the game. Most games that were published in the late-80s and early to mid-90s, including Doom, used this distribution model.

In 1994, when it became apparent that the video game industry was trending towards games rendered in 3D, Apogee adopted "3D Realms" as their trading name, with every game from Duke Nukem 3D onwards bearing the 3D Realms logo. The company was still formally known as Apogee, however, and retained the rights to the Apogee name and logo.

The Apogee name and logo, as well as the distribution rights to several games released under the Apogee brand, were sold by 3D Realms in 2008 to Miller's college friend, Terry Nagy, who proceeded to set up Apogee Software, LLC. This new company focuses mostly on publishing projects from smaller independent developers, as well as publishing remasters of some original Apogee Software titles.

Under a corporate reorganization in April 2021, Apogee Software, LLC was rebranded as Apogee Entertainment, and Miller was hired to handle the company's publishing efforts.
