The main character and narrator in the story. Vox is a 22-year-old old frequenter of /x/ (a paranormal board on 4Chan) who began to post on the boards after things started happening that she couldn't quite explain.

Vox lived with her boyfriend until a series of strange coincidences led to her discovering that he had been cheating on her. She moved to a new apartment, and things only got weirder from there. After dealing with hearing voices, weird silences in her apartment where all sound (from the TV, radio, etc) stopped working completely, and finally seeing somebody standing at the end of her bed when she woke up one night, she went to /x/ for help.

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Little Jeep" by Beau (after the Popeye character, not the car).
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: A platonic (or at least not explicitly romantic) example. In the final update, Vox posts that she thinks that Beau is in serious trouble. She's worried about him, saying that part of the reason why she's posting the update is that she wants advice for how she could help him.
  • Badass Normal: Vox is the only main human character and she has no know powers to speak of. Despite this, she shows the same resilience as anyone else in the story, and at one point goes up against Humanoid Abomination Beau armed with nothing but a rusty nail and a salt shaker.
  • Back Story: Vox starts giving her backstory with Beau in the first chapter and reveals the rest over the course of the story.
  • Blanket Fort: Vox and Beau met one night when Vox was a child and Beau (a terrifying-looking man who stood as tall as her ceiling) showed up in her bedroom while she slept. Vox said that he looked sad, and he responded that he was sad because he wanted to eat her voice. Vox's response was to offer to sing to him and then make blanket forts with him.
  • The Determinator: Vox is determined to figure out if she's hallucinating or if something else is going on.
  • Face Your Fears: After getting tired of being terrified and running from Beau, Vox decides one night to smoke some pot and wait for him to show up. When he does, she stands in her hallway and talks to him head-on.
  • Meaningful Name: "Vox" means "voice" in Latin.
  • Music for Courage: Downplayed example. Vox sings or hums to herself when things start getting creepy.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Vox" is stated to not be the author's real name, just an internet pseudonym. To preserve her anonymity, she writes everyone she interacts with face to face calling her "Vox" in instances where they used her real name.
  • Pen Name: See "Only Known by Their Nickname" above.
  • Tears of Fear: As a child while hiding in the bathtub from a monster pretending to be her grandmother. The monster hears and it's implied is going to hurt or kill her, but Beau shows up and scares it off.

Beau

Vox's childhood "imaginary friend". Beau is the King of the Quiet Place, a dark kingdom that's... well, always very quiet. He was a hunter for the former king and is still a very skilled tracker and fighter, besting everything from Vox's cat to the king of nightmares.

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: It's very unclear for most of the story if Beau actually cares about Vox or just considers her as belonging to him; but in the last update, Vox is referred to as "the girl Beau loved". Whether this love is romantic or platonic is left unclear.
  • Back Story: Many chapters of the story consist entirely of Vox giving his parts of his backstory.
  • Berserk Button: Harming or threatening Vox.
  • Blanket Fort: Beau was considering eating Vox's voice when she was a child, but he didn't want to because he didn't want to become like the previouse voice-eating king of his kingdom (whom he hated). The first night they met was when he woke Vox up to talk about it and she offered to sing for him if he let her keep her voice. While he considered, she made blanket forts with him; and he liked it so much that he decided to spare Vox her voice and visit often to play more games with her.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: While no one is sure what exactly Beau is, he's definitely nonhuman and sees no issue in doing things like killing Vox's cat because it bit her and made her cry.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: If the "anonymous" last post is anything to go by, Beau is casually said to have died, with no explanation given.
  • Humanoid Abomination: It's never stated what Beau is, exactly; but despite his humanoid appearance, he appears to be something completely different.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: Is described as having rows of crocodile-like teeth. He likes to intimidate people by snarling with them; but even when he's not trying to be intimidating, his smile is described as unnaturally wide and creepy.
  • Not-So-Imaginary Friend: To Vox.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Beau" is a nickname that Vox gave to him when she was a child. It stuck.
  • Slasher Smile: He has several rows of alligator-like teeth and smiles unnaturally wide. And that's when he's happy.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: In part of Beau's Back Story, it's revealed that he and the Moon are in love but can't be together because she has to stay in the sky.
